(Who reverses it more, mate, Gough or Jones?) Darren Gough = Apnay mou Mian Mithoo?

  • “Other players who tried to fill my boots didn’t do any better than Darren Gough, and they went for a lot more runs than I would go for.”

  • “A lot of players in interviews mention me as being a big influence on their career,” he says proudly. “And they’ve all mentioned me in their books.”

  • “It’s sad really when you look back at some of the players,” says Gough. “Alec Stewart was a great player, myself, Caddick, Hick. Graham Thorpe was a hugely under-rated player. These guys never won an Ashes, so they’ll never get the recognition they deserve.” It is not the only thing he feels he missed out on.

  • “I could probably still have been playing for England now, even though I’m 35, 'cos I am good enough.”

  • You reckon you could be in the Test attack right now, bowling with Flintoff, Harmison and Hoggard? “Without a doubt.” (“It makes people look so funny and crap at their job when I get back playing again”).

  • Gough may not like computers but he has a reputation for enjoying his statistics. “I’ve got over 450 wickets for England and I don’t think I get the credit I deserve for that.”

  • “I’m the leading wicket-taker of all time in one-dayers and it’s going to take somebody at least five or six years to get past me.”

  • Final question: who reverses it more, him or Simon Jones? He turns to a Leicestershire player. “Who reverses it more, mate, Gough or Simon Jones?” “There’s only one bowler,” comes the reply. “There you go,” the departing Gough says over his shoulder. “There’s only one bowler.”

I mean, good grief! I am itching to see Gough as much as the next person standing besides me back in the English squad as well, but this article…nothing short of painful.

A bitter and indigestible read, to say the least.

Re: (Who reverses it more, mate, Gough or Jones?) Darren Gough = Apnay mou Mian Mithoo?

guess the self centres person in that artical :hmmm:

Re: (Who reverses it more, mate, Gough or Jones?) Darren Gough = Apnay mou Mian Mitho

A mighty decent article written by Tim de Lisle over at CricInfo has supported the pick of Gough. As follows:

1. Ship in experience
Fletcher is forever pointing to the inexperience of his young understudies. But it is his choice to pick them. Apart from Glen Chapple, Fletcher keeps turning to youth. He seems to have forgotten that when England had bad injuries ahead of the 2001 Ashes, they recalled two alleged has-beens, Mark Butcher and Mark Ramprakash - who turned out to be their best players in the series. So send for Darren Gough, who is no longer a spearhead but can at least bowl straight and full.

I fully agree with all of his points - #1 through #6. Duly noted.

**Gough hits out at England snubs **

Darren Gough believes England’s selectors are holding a grudge against him after his TV dancing antics.

Gough opted out of last winter’s tours to spend time with his family but then appeared on a BBC talent show.

“I never give up and I’m determined to get back in but the only reason I’m not selected was the fact I did Strictly Come Dancing,” he told BBC Five Live. “The reason I took the winter off was to spend some time with my children and it was the best winter I’ve had.”

He said of his decision: “I don’t regret it one bit - I spent some quality time with my children.”
Gough, who turns 36 in September, retired from Test cricket three years ago but was part of the one-day side last summer, before deciding against touring Pakistan and India.

Since his last appearance, England have lost 13 of their 16 one-day internationals, with one of their victories coming over Ireland.
Gough’s 234 ODI wickets are 89 more than any other England bowler and more than the combined career tally of the attack used during the 5-0 series defeat to Sri Lanka.

The one-day side’s next assignment is a five-match series against Pakistan, after the current Test matches, with two more 50-over tournaments before the World Cup.

Gough told the Simon Mayo programme: "A lot of people on commentary are saying, ‘England’s best bowler is playing for Essex.’ :hehe:

"It’s up to me to keep performing and let people push for me to get back in. “If I don’t get a recall for the Pakistan series, I’m not going to get the recall but I can only put in my performances on the field.”

Gough out of one-day series

Darren Gough has been ruled out of the remainder the Natwest Series due to an injured left shin. Graham Onions, the Durham pace bowler, who is in England’s Champions Trophy 30 has been called up as a replacement and will join the squad on Monday.

After playing in the Twenty20 against Pakistan as well as the opening two matches of the NatWest Series, Gough will miss the last three matches after an MRI scan revealed a bone stress reaction in his left shin.

“Darren has been released following pain in the outer aspect of his left leg,” Dr Peter Gregory, the ECB Chief Medical Officer, said. "Prior to the Twenty20 he had rested for two weeks to settle mild bone bruising of the left shin. The pain from this had settled when he joined the England squad but has returned over the course of the past three matches.

“An MRI scan today showed a marked bone stress reaction in his fibula and Darren has been advised to rest from bowling for six weeks. He will return to Essex to receive ongoing assessment and rehabilitation.”

Gough added: "I’m obviously extremely disappointed that this injury has ruled me out of the England side, I was looking forward to a strong NatWest Series which could have helped my chances for the upcoming winter tours.
"I’ve had a niggle for about a month which seemed to clear up with a couple of weeks rest before the NatWest Series but unfortunately it has returned to the point where I can’t go any further at the moment.

Gough failed to take a wicket during his brief return to the national team, suggesting he has lost penetration with the new ball. However, the bowler himself said: “I was pleased with the way I bowled without much luck during the first few matches so it’s disappointing I won’t be able to play any further part in this series.”

England were already due to name a replacement pace bowler in their squad after Steve Harmison was ruled out with a back problem before the opening match. England are 1-0 down in the five-match series following Sunday’s seven-wicket defeat at Lord’s.

*Here comes another excuse :hoonh: *
England are going to miss their best ODI bowler, a 36 years old (waist size, probably around 40) Darren Gough :hehe:
