Well you can’t pin point at one person who came up with this idea . But as I read that since the time of Apple 1 , Jobs envisioned a book size computer . But at that time of course it was hard to come up with the hardware that can fit in a book size gadget , but later on after the release of iPod he was in to the business of creating small gadgets .
Now what motivated him . . . he was invited to a birthday party of a software engineer who was working for Microsoft at that time . Bill and Jobs were both in that party . That software engineer was bragging about a book size device that will revolutionize the computers . Jobs got angry because of this bragging and the very next day when he came to office he called a meeting and declared that Apple has to come up with a book size computers . He always use to think that Microsoft doesn’t know how to build stuff (products), as he was carrying grudges since the days when the Windows was born ( as Jobs thought that Bill stole his idea from MacOS ) .
After that it was joint effort of dozens of design, hardware and software people under the guidance of Jobs . Jobs also have his name in the patent of this product .
