Was it you who chose the name of your child(ren) or someone else. Most people think/ say that elders (parents, inlaws) have a greater right regarding chosing and naming the child. What is your opinion. What if you dont like the name they chose and cant do anything?
Re: Who named ure children?
Who’s popping out the baby? Me or his mother, grandmother etc?
Yeah.. ![]()
Re: Who named ure children?
Well, I don’t have any kids…but I know my mom choose the names for me and my sisters. My grand parents gave their “recommendations” but at the end, my mom had the final say.
My best friend is 7 month’s pregnant right now and she’s picking names for her boy…her in law’s have recommended a few names but she doesn’t like any of them…and she’s not planning on calling her child by a name that she doesn’t like for the rest of her life…and her husband supports her completely.
Umm…what do you mean if they choose a name and you can’t do anything about it? It’s YOUR child…the only way you can’t do anything about it is if you choose to give up that right.
Re: Who named ure children?
I chose my son's name and I care less if someone doesn't like the name I chose. THere will be people who would go ooh and aah about your child's name but then there will be those who would give you lots of recommendations. I think it's the parents' right to choose their babies names.
P.S. when you are in the hospital they will bring you some paper work to fill out and send to the state, just make sure no one else gets to see it and you fill it out with the name you like. And later just say oh well the paper has already been sent with the name that I chose and can't be resent.
Re: Who named ure children?

they aren't born yet
Re: Who named ure children?
That's one thing desi families often have a conflict about.
I really think it should be parent's right although other people
should be able to give out suggestions.
Re: Who named ure children?
well, in my case, my father inlaw chooses the name of the kids of the family.. when my son was born, he kept on thinking for 7 days but he couldnt come up0 with a name, he recommended a few which i didnt like.. at the end my husband named our son...
But i feel that it should be upon the mother and father to choose the name. No third party should be allowed.
Re: Who named ure children?
when my wife was admitted for delivery, i had to put the name on the form (for a boy and a girl)....
i suggested Abdul-Rehman for a boy, but my father suggested i change it to Abdullah (and that was eventually my son's name)....
i suggested Ruqayya for the girl, but my mother and wife mutually agreed to have it changed to Rabi'a....
Re: Who named ure children?
It should be up to the child's parents but it's always a nice gesture to consult with the elders and ask for their input even if you don't ultimately go with their suggestions.
Having said that, I didn't ask anyone for ideas on names when Junior was born. I'm such a hypocrite.

Re: Who named ure children?
ma mom told me she chose ma name.. n ma dadi chose ma brother's name..
Re: Who named ure children?
My grandfather has chosen most of the names in our family.
When my children were born, my own parents chose their names. I don't mind, they have chosen good Islamic names.
When my daughter was born, I liked the name Kiran, in fact that's what I wrote on the hospital form since we couldn't come up with anything else. But my Mom said it was better to choose an Islamic name. Then the next day an Imam gave my Dad several names from which my parents chose one and on the official registry form we finally wrote Sidra.
When I was carrying my son, my Mom and I kept puzzling what name to choose. Then close to his birth my Mom heard a voice in a dream saying Sirag Munir. And that's what we named him.
My inlaws didn't mind us naming the kids. They liked the names. So no trouble with that.
