Who is Muslim?

ok, I was talking to my friend who happens to be jewish and she told me that in the Jewish religion, when a baby is born, if the mother is jewish then the child will also be “a Jew.” So that got me thinking on whether we have something like that in Islam? I remember in sunday school, the Imam said every newborn is born Muslim, but then adapts to the religion of the parents. Is this true?

Yes...that is indeed the concept.

The reasoning behind it is that if a person is left alone, with no foreign influences whatsoever on his nature since birth, his senses will instinctively point him towards one central supreme power that is responsible for regulating everything in this universe.
Prime examples of such behavior can be taken from Hazrat Ibrahim AS and Hazrat Luqman AS.

Hazrat Ibrahim AS used reasoning and logic to defy his own initial thoughts about the sun, moon, or the starts being God, since all these objects appear only at certain times. And Hazrat Luqman, who was not a follower of any prophet, and neither was he himself a prophet, was blessed with knowledge by Allah SWT, and using that knowledge and common sense, he strengthened his belief in one supreme power.

Now there were other religions which propagated the same 'one God' belief, eg christianity and judaism, and those religions initially had the same status as Islam did, but over the course of time their beliefs got tainted and ultimately led them to polytheistic ideas.

Going by that line of thought, shouldnt the majority of ancient civilizations have had religious beliefs similar to islam? are there any such recorded similarities from anywhere in the world other than the middle-east?
