It's an Arabic term derived from the root “Slam” or peace. It means one who strives for “peace”. All the religious connotations attached to this term are man’s creation. Jews are people of Judia, Christian are follower of Christ, and so on. Any one person can be a Muslim, a Jew, a Christian and anything else that he she is born with and strives to be.

The requirement of being a Muslim are:

To strive for peace by whatever means, e.g., to tell the truth, to respect every human being regardless of race, sex, religion, creed, etc. which was the basic message of Islam. It only got polluted by the end of Khilafa and with the introduction of Saltanats (or kingdoms) that resulted in very many different interpretations of Islam and what we see today is completely opposite of what this religion was intended for. Brother killing brother, spread of hatred is justified on communal differences, etc.

This is beautifully said in Persian:

“Agar Shah-e-Roz goyad Shab-es-taiN
Bayabad guft aink Maho-pervaiN”

Meaning, if the King calls day a night, you should say “yes Milord, Look Stars are shining.”

With your permission Muslim 786, I wish to make a few corrections to what you stated:

There are 5 fundamentals of Muslim faith:

(1) to beieve in God
(2) to believe in His Angels
(3) to believe in His Holy Books
(4) to believe in His messengers
(5) to believe in the day of judgement

Practically, A Muslim is liable:

(1) to declare his faith in oneness of God and the prophethood of Mohammad (PBUH). "Shahada(h)"

(2) to perform "Sala(t)" i.e. to lead one's life as per Islamic law (Persian word "Nimaz" is only for the ritual which is only a small part part of "Sala(t)".

(3) to practice "Saum" in the month of Ramadan

(4) to perform "Hujj" (at least once in a life time).

(5) to pay the governmental taxes "Zaka(t)"

Jihad and sacrifice are the aspects which surrounds the whole human life every-time, everywhere! but talking about the fundamentals one must take care as these are mentioned in Quran in this particular order.

Do you have the verse in the Quran that these are written?

Jazakallah

hope you dnt mind me asking sophia but where have you completed your islamic education assuming you are a scholar.......im impressed by your knowledge of islam.

keep up the good work

Yes! it reads ....say....

"Amant o billah e, wa malaikatihi, wa kutobihi, wa rosolihi, wal yaumil aakhir"

Thanks sufimaster! I am flattered!

If it really appeals you then you are suggested to study the work of Allama Ghulam Ahmed Pervez, the founder of "Talo e Islam" (25 B, Gulberg, Lahore).

Rubbi zidni Ilma!

where in the Quran can I find it?

Jazakallah

People , after trying to live my life according to Islam , I have come to the conclusion that , I just have to try to live my life according to whatever is in Quran , that is I should live my whole life studying the Quran,I have studied logic too and have found out , every rule in the Book is logical if we try to measure it.
And one more thing , my belief is we know nothing about anything ,we shouldn't say these and these people are better Muslims , actually we don't have a right to say so.
We don't even know the result of ourselves.

The person who only believe in the first KALIMa ... is he allowed to call hmself muslim... If he Belives in Oneness of God and Hazrat Mohammad (pbuh) as a Prophet ...Is he a muslim or not...????

Lucifer,im not aware whether u r Qadiani sympathiser trying to enter into debate with regular muslims.?????

Khud ko mane wala mussalman ho nahi sakta

if you belive only in allah, god ,khuda you cant be muslim

but if you

ba juz hube mohommed ke kqamil imaan ho nahi sakta

without essence of mohommed your religion as muslim is incomplete

even christian, hindu, jews, budhist have ishwer /god but what makes muslim is they believe mohommed is the last prophet, quran is gods book & in order to understand koran we should read hadith for ilustration & also do sunnah i.e. copy mohommed 's example as a role model&even though he is never god only human he was a perfect man,no doubt.

Very much right! To be more lenient, who so ever (even an illiteratre person) wants to be a Muslim is a Muslim. The day he/she will come to know that "Education" is a must for a Muslim, he/she would develop his/her knowledge to be a good believer.

Similarly, No Muslim can be regarded as a "kafir" till he/she declares to be a Non-Muslim.

Salam Masnoon
Please add in the requirements to be muslim. (I don't mean disrespect of anyone)
* To believe in Qadr (Taqdeer) Good or Bad is From Allah.

  • Anybody deny any of the Ayah of Quran is being considered as 'KAFIR'

Jazzakallah Khair
