Who is India's greatest captain?

** let us see what guppies thinl? **

**
Sourav Ganguly**

Aggressive, outspoken, in your face and India’s most successful overseas captain. The current Indian captain may not be tactically brilliant but he wins matches.

In ODIs

**
Mohammad Azharuddin**

He is India’s most successful captain with 14 wins. A quiet captain who believed that the players are professionals and they knew what had to be done on the field.

In ODIs

**
Ajit Wadekar**

One of the shrewdest captains India ever had. He led India to its first series triumph against the West Indies (a feat no Indian team has duplicated) and back to back series wins against England, first away, then at home.

**
Sunil Gavaskar**

A thinking captain, one of India’s best. His record speaks for itself. With him as captain, India suffered very few defeats. Always willing to try out new ideas; always willing to experiment.

In ODIs

**
Sachin Tendulkar**

His record as captain may not have been very great and most pundits will always reckon that he could have done better. Many also felt he expected too much of his players.

In ODIs

**
Kapil Dev
**
The 1983 World Cup triumph raised the profile of his captaincy. He captained as he played; from his heart. Was declared Indian cricketer of the century by Wisden, but does that make him the greatest captain too?

Well, if you guys like Ganguly, you have low standards... I would only be satisfied with a captain like Imran Khan.

who gives a hoot

Ganguly is good, I hardly remember Kapil or Gavaskar as captains.
Compared to Sachin and Azharuddin, I would say Ganguly.
He has brought in the youngsters which have resulted numerous of success in the past 2 years.

Azhar was not only the most successful Indian captain for the longest time, but took over and led a team of mostly above-average players (relatively), and one that was constantly changing. He wasn't aggressive enough though.

Ganguly has had a better pool of players to lead on the other hand. So much so that some of them share the duties with him (Kaif/Yuvraj handling fielding placements etc. and Srinath/Kumble overseeing the bowling). He has a good approach and uses some shrewd tactics, but would be far from being considered India's best captain ever.

Tendulkar's name in the above list is absolutely senseless. One of the most disappointing captains in the last decade or so.

I tend to agree with you.Ganguly did won test matches outside and his oneday record is best.
But Wadekar's acheivement was also great.Beating ENG in ENG and WI in WI during 70s was not a joke and he did it with a mediocre player except Gavaskar and Chandra. :)

Ganguli best becase Wadekar etc old peapul! Ganguli good batman also and captan nowday. so beter.

Ganguly without a doubt.I liked Ajay Jadeja , though he captained in just few matches but he looked a natural captin to me.

Andha qanoon

fair_&_balance, I know this is a little off topic here but I just realized what your favorite hindi movie is. :D
Do you want me to tell you? :D

what is that??

To be honest I would say Kapil Dev as he really was a good all-rounder in his time. He was also the captain when India won the world cup and also when India beat England in 1986. When he was captain, he did not have a lot of good players but they still managed to do well.

Azhar ruined it by getting involved in match fixing whereas Ganguly has not been doing it for long enough and has a good young team to captain. Tendulkar was a failure & Gawaskar was too negative. Ajit Wadekar- never seen him but from what you have described maybe the best captain (if I had seen him!!).

Gangulie world best. world best means India best also na?

hey na.. nahi na... samjha karao na... This is about India's best captain, no one said Ganguly is world's best captain. Pehlay post ko dekho, phir samjho, phir bhi samjh na aaye to kisi shareef aadmi ko pm karo, woh bhi na samjha sakey to dictionary dekho... hopefully in the mean time the thread would be so far down you wont be able to find it, and no one will be tortured by reading your brilliant comments.
