He’s the father of Zionism in a way; Herzl was the guy who first proposed the idea of an independent Jewish state.
From what i have read, he had come across an anti-Jewish demonstration in France (late 19th century), and that transformed his perceptions of Jews and their ‘place’ in the world. He believed Jews would never be welcome anywhere in any country unless they had their ‘own’ homeland. He organized six Zionist Congresses (sorry not sure about the precise number, but it was at least six). He wrote a few books, and probably some papers/articles that should still be accessible through some Jewish archive websites.
i think his original plan was to have Jews emigrate to Uganda, not to Palestine. But apparently some Jews objected to that, so Palestine was ultimately decided upon.
