Hey all,
Who gives the red barat day dress, the girls family or the grooms?
I always assumed the grooms family as they are the ones who are making her a bride for their son or not ![]()
How was your, or is your going to be?

Re: Who gives what
There are alot of threads already opened on this topic. Basically, it depends on your background/family traditions. In Hyderabadi customs, the grooms side gives both Shaadi & Walima joras...the traditional outfits are a Kharra Dupatta for the wedding day and a green sari for the Walima. The trend is veering away from those two now, to more modern lehngas etc.
Since I've been on GS, I've learned that it's more common practice for the bride's side to take care if the Shaadi dress while groom's side just the Walima only.
So it's really up to the two families to do as they see fit according to their own traditions and budgets.
Re: Who gives what
As KC ^ has said, it does depend on your families & their traditions.
With most Punjabi's including myself it's always that the girl comes frOm her house in a red jorra.
Re: Who gives what
according to my mum, she says the grooms side usually bring both dresses the wedding and valima.
however my in laws are from Lahore, they said that our side will be making the wedding dress.
Re: Who gives what
In our family, both dresses come from the groom's side. But the bride's family makes the groom's outfits as well.

Yup, that's what we do too Reha!

That's what we have always done. However, sometimes the girls side specifically wants to get her own clothing. In that case you just give money and let them get outfits to their liking.
Re: Who gives what
depends on where you are from. based on my understand, Karachi-based folks the groom's side gives the wedding and valima jora for the bride, and the bride's side gives the same for the groom. In Punjab-based families I've seen that the wedding day outfits come from the bride's side, and the valima outfits come from the groom's side.
these days i think people just ask and determine what works best for the families involved.
Re: Who gives what
In my family it goes like this:
Bride - Barat outfit - from parents. Walima - from in-laws.
Groom - Barat outfit - from parents. Walima - from in-laws.
I guess it just depends on your own family traditions.

Re: Who gives what
wow - can't believe so many people have the tradition of having the susuraal or in-laws make BOTH dresses (baraat and walima). What if they have horrible taste?! For us, on the baraat, bride's parents do EVERYTHING i.e. the whole function, plus dresses for bride and groom; on walima, groom's parents do everything i.e. function plus dresses for bride and groom. That way even if your in-laws have rubbish taste at least you have the baraat to choose what you want!
