Designers can greatly influence what direction fashion will go in.
Working five or six months ahead of the season, the press attends fashion shows presenting designer collections; the media will then give editorial coverage to trends they think their readership is interested in.
Store buyers work many months in advance of the season to place orders with manufacturers for styles they think their customers will want to buy.
Celebrities and other opinion leaders (socialites and other glitterati) are usually the first to sport new looks, spurring the buying public into accepting emerging trends.
So everyone from big-name designers to celebrities may be behind influencing the direction fashion will go in.
But ultimately, it is you, the consumer, who will decide what is “in” when you choose whether or not to buy into a trend
elite do play a role in promoting fashion but they are not the sole authority in deciding whats in and whats out.... the thing is fashion is always there... look around ... dresses of the people of Hunza, Chitral, sidh, Balochistan, kashmir are so pretty ...... in the west designers may pick victorain era and design it into more modern and more acceptable fashion for today.... what the designers do is they use them with sleek cuts and improved fabirc present them on ramp and present a new trend to the general public to follow..... but again its the general public who decides what to follow for a season and what to leave behind at the ramps

True.. a lot of factors effect fashion trends, but I still think in Pakistan elite is the strongest influence on fashion - when they want they can make the masses wear short shirts and pattialas or switch to long flairy shirts...
