There are plenty of links suggesting that they are arains, so much so that I guess his father or grandfather chaired All India Arain conference.

The wikipedia article suggests that the Bhutto clan are arains, and for that the link they are using to substantiate that suggests that they are rajputs.

Bhutto might be a variation of Bhutta tribe (of Punjab). I am not sure if Bhutta is a jatt or a rajput tribe.

Same reason why Nawaz Sharif chose Musharaf!
Highly Egotistic Leaders like to find low profile subordinates who they think will not be a threat to their regime!
Both Generals were junior to the ones at the time who would have been appropriate choices for the COAS position!
Both of these choices turned out to be the Chooser's down fall!

I read somewhere that Zia was ultimate chaploos (flattery expert) and Bhutto was extremely Khush aamad pasand (loved to be flattered). phir ye to hona hi tha. :)

Well it does show that the leaders should appoint people on merit, they flaunt these basic rules and cause a problem for themselves in the end.

Nawaz Sharif was scared of Ali Kuli Khan (who should have been the COAS) and he appointed a miskeen Musharraf (who had no standing). And then we know what happened…

Generals were never better. Whatever they did we are facing today. Even they didn’t leave a set-up which could produce good democracy.
