Whistleblowing

No not at the sexy ladies.

As in when you go and tell a figure of authority about something going on at work which is not right.

If you know someone is taking ‘sick leave’ or ‘study leave’ but actually going on holiday and you are very aware that this compromises their education/skills set/work and there is a very strict policy against this.

What would you do?

Re: Whistleblowing

I believe in minding my own business.

Re: Whistleblowing

The question is: how would you feel if that person loses his/her job because you felt you had to do what you had to do?

um, yeah no.. I wouldn't do it unless this behavior is repetitive and they don't feel guilty for doing this at all.

Re: Whistleblowing

How does it affect me?

Re: Whistleblowing

this is called tattle tale not whistle blowing.
Whistle blowing is done against:
An alleged misconduct which may be classified in many ways; for example, a violation of a law, rule, regulation and/or a direct threat to public interest, such as fraud, health/safety violations, and corruption.

She/he is using sick leave for some other purpose it does not hurt the company in anyway. If she/he have used up all the sick leaves and he/she gets sick in real he/she will have to take unpaid leaves it is his/her own loss . Company does not loose in any way , shape or form.

Re: Whistleblowing

wrong interpretation.

Most of the time regulations are pretty well defined on when can you take SICK leave. If someone is taking it for something else (and making company PAY for it), they are working against the rules and regulations.

Re: Whistleblowing

if an individual is doing that and nobody else in the organization is doing then it's NOT whistle-blowing...it's snitching! if this kinda practice is common and there is a cover-up at the higher levels then it will be called whistle-blowing! :) agree?

Re: Whistleblowing

Thank you for your help this is what I wanted to say, but my post did not come out right . There is no coverup here.
Even if someone goes and tell HR , they will just listen and ignore and no action will be taken because of the reason I gave in my post.

Re: Whistleblowing

aaaaawwwww...sholly!!! tghank you for agreeing :) next time, you PM me if you have any intention to make a post. i'll wait for your lead :)

Re: Whistleblowing

Ok here is what happened in the case i was talking about.

As medical students we are not allowed to run off on holiday whenever we feel like it as our education as future doctors is compromised and our character and integrity questioned.

A girl took 5 days off uni and pretended she was sick - she missed teaching she would only get once in her med school career. She could probs catch up using a book and pass her exams that way, but its obvs not the same as seeing a patient.

She was talking very loudly about her holiday and someone reported this, she got given a very severe warning by the med school.

Fair or unfair?

Re: Whistleblowing

^ The only person she is harming is herself in that case. Why pay for education when you are going to cheat? She could have been discreet about it but obviously didn't care enough.

Re: Whistleblowing

Fair in this case because she is a student and her career is at stake.

Re: Whistleblowing

Very Fair.

Re: Whistleblowing

she is also potentially harming future patients that she will misdiagnose/mistreat due to the training she missed. This is not small potatoes ... we are talking about potentially lethal consequences for someone.

OP: physicians are expected to adhere to a very high ethical standard ... which includes but is not limited to complete transparency of all actions.
manipulation of the educational system and lying is a clear violation of these ethical standards.
imagine this doc down the line ....... she'll eventually make a medical mistake (everyone does) and instead of owning up/rectifying ... she might lie or lie by omission .......
would that be acceptable behavior? ........ nope
so yes appropriate punishment in this case ... its a message/training for future ..... you lie/manipulate ... you suffer the consequences.
