Which Company would you choose? A or B?

A friend of mine asked me a question, and considering I dont have much experience in the working world, I thought I’d ask here.

He isnt very experienced himself, but has been working longer than I have.

His wants input on which company would be better to work for:

1.) Company A - Large company with over 2000 employees. Multi-million dollar revenue per year. One of the top companies nationally in the line of products it offers. Requires what a typical company would in terms of work performance, etc, and compensates accordingly. Chances for advancement are only within the specific company.

2.) Company B - Owned by an entrepeneur who owns several businesses. Few employees. Entrepreneur is a millionaire, but the companies he runs are not well recognized. Initially requires a lot more than Company A requires from the individual, and then compensates accordingly later. Chance to move into other businesses owned by entrepreneur.

The catch is that Company B is in hometown of the guy. Company A is cross-country. However, let’s just imagine that Company A offered living assistance, and therefore there is a level playing-field.

Which company is better to work for, in terms of future advancement? Would Company A be better since it is better recognized? Also, what if company A paid more than company B? Which would you choose with these few facts I have given, and why?

My friend isnt leaning towards either one of them in particular. He would like a stable future with growth, if not within the company, then good experience and recommendations that can get him a good position in another company in the future. Thanks. smile

If stability is his priority, then it should def be Company A.

Mr. Entrepreneur can promise all the rewards and compensation he wants, and he'll deliver too. But if the ship's sinking, you'll be left swimming to shore on ur own. On the other hand, performing well in smaller organizations may lead to more recognition and faster movement up the ladder, so there are advantages, but they don't compare to being in a position to work for the top dawgs in the biz, even if they're on the other coast.

I'd go for Company A even if there were minimal or zero living assistance. The only second thought I'd have vis a vis moving outta town is if I were a care-giver or caretaker of a dependent such as family who'd find it difficult on their own. Across town, state or country is small compromise when compared to working for the movers and shakers in the industry.
