Hi guys,I am currently 26 wks pregnant,n was just making a list of what I need to buy and what not…i am planning to breast feed the baby, and was thinking that i would need a breast pump.i dont want a manula one as i think it would be too bothersome,so thinking of buying an electric one..
but dont knwo which one to go for?has anyone tried different brands, and reviews, any advice?
i have heard that medela is very good but which one of its different types?its got single/double pump/swing/free style etc etc ..which one?
I bought the medela pump in style and love it! But my advice would be (and also what the lactation consultant told me) that for the first 6 weeks exclusively breast feed... to get your supply going. The baby goes through alot of growth spurts in the beginning. And so the baby will keep asking you for milk and you'll think that maybe your not producing enough. But in reality your producing fine.. the baby is telling your body that I'm getting bigger and you need to produce more milk in the next few days. So don't get discouraged by that. After 6 weeks is when you should start pumping. Also try renting a pump from the hospital first. The hospital grade ones are much better tan any you can get in the market. Ok... on top of all of this if you hospital offers do take breastfeeding classes!
Get a double pump. AND PLEASE get a cheapo pumping top (very fitted tank top with holes to hold the pump in place). It will make your life sooo much easier.
I agree with above. Medela pump in style is the one to go for. It's just as great as the Medela Symphony which is the hospital grade one! I managed to pump exclusively for 6 months. And yes, please please please make sure you latch the baby on for the first 6 weeks...I didnt due to problems but inshallah will try to latch for the next baby...
I had the Medela Pump in Style Advanced and really liked it. That being said, also before buying it yourself, try to find out if your insurance covers it. Ours did and ALhamdulillah and we didnt pay a dime.
well,a lot of ppl have said to me that i shud try to latch the babay on..n if u get a pump before the babys born u tend to go for expressing rather than feeding..so not sure what to do..really,this shopping is making me go nuts!
^ if you want to nurse the baby, you'll nurse the baby, regardless of whether you have a pump at home or not. and if you have it prior to birth, you can do both to build up a back-up supply of breast milk in the freezer in case you have to go to work or need someone to do a night feed while you get some rest etc. just pump for 10 minutes each side after nursing and freeze the milk.
you know I am very afraid in case I am unable to breastfeed at all, it will be a waste of money BUT I am still gonna get it with the raincheck that I have and then not open it until I am ready to use it.. if I dont use it, I will just return it but I would rather have it available at home than running last minute for something like this!
or you can wait to try the hospital grade one first, rent it for a few days and then if you want to, go ahead and buy it.. keep an eye for sale on medela pump in style.. you will hardly ever find one, but if you do, purchase it!

I did that.I got the hospital grade pump on rent for 2 weeks I think. Also, before leaving the hospital I asked about it,and they gave me the entire pack of accessories that went with that Medela pump.It included bottles, and tubings and whatever goes with them.It also included another bottle and a manual pump thing (I never used that)
I started with exclusive BFing and never needed the pump (or so I thought) and returned it.
A few months later when I again felt the need for it I rented it from the hospital. But by that time my supply had gone too low so I had to end BFing...:(
BUT inquire about rental beforehand...!!...Most of the times they are out of them and they put you on a waiting list...you surely don't want that...

i had it for two weeks too and its excellent, i agree. at my hospital, i paid $40 for the tubes, flanges and bottles- for hygiene purposes these were mine to keep. the pump was a deposit of $70 which i got back when i returned it and the rental was $28 per week. not a bad deal at all!
