Which brand/type of baby bottles to buy? Please help!

Hi everyone! There are so many moms on this site, I was hoping some of you could help me out.

I’m 29 weeks pregnant (Alhumdolilah) and am currently picking items for my baby registry. The one item that I am having the most trouble with is baby bottles! There are so many different types (glass vs. bpa free plastic bottles) and so many different brands too!

I am considering the following at the moment:

  • Avent BPA free plastic baby bottles
  • Playtex Drop ins
  • Glass bottles (brand to be determined if I go this route)

I have a few questions for the moms out there:

1.) Do you use glass or BPA free plastic? Glass bottles are obviously less harmful (chemical wise) but they are heavy and can break or the baby can drop it on their head. In the first few months they will work because I would always hold the bottle for the baby, but after that I am not so sure. Also, it will be too heavy in my diaper bag no? What are your thoughts?

2.) If you use BPA free plastic bottles, how do you sterilize them? I know Avent comes with a microwave sterilizer system but I keep reading that plastic bottles (even if they are BPA free) should never be boiled or put in microwave? Other sites, however, such as Health Canada advise to boil them for 2 minutes to sterilize. I keep getting conflicting information. What is the safest and correct way to sterilize BPA free plastic bottles?

3.) Does anyone have experience using either Avent BPA free plastic or Playtex Drop ins? Please provide your reviews.

4.) If you used Playtex drop ins, how did you take them with you in the diaper bag? Can you put the breast milk in the liner and put it into the bottle and carry a pre-made bottle in your diaper bag or will the liner burst in your diaper bag, causing all the milk to spill out? I really like the Playtex drop ins because the liners are sterilized so clean up is much easier and no worrying about sterilizing the bottles, my only concern is how I would pack a pre-made bottle in my diaper bag. I don’t want the liner to burst.

Baby bottle research has literally consumed my life for the last 2 weeks. I’ve done nothing but come home from work and research bottle after bottle and I am still no further than when I started. sigh Sorry for the long post, but I’d really appreciate some insight! Thanks a bunch!

I have used Tommee Tippee's bottles since my baby was 3 months. These are plastic BPA free as well. Am not too sure about glass bottles since they are heavy, can break and might hurt the baby too. But each to their own.

The best thing I liked about Tommee Tippee is that their shape doesn't cause nipple confusion incase you want to supplement Bfeeding with formula.

For sterlisation, I had microwave sterilising bags. They were really handy esp for times when I was traveling or at somebody's else's place.

I used glass ones (by Born Free) and we did not have any issues with them in terms of breakage. They are a bit heavy, but nothing that was problematic, tho my daughter did not hold her own bottle until much later.

We never bought a sterilizer. We used to wash with warm soap and water, then boil water in our kettle and pour it over the washed items for an extra rinse. That worked fine, but a sterilizer would use less water.

Re: Which brand/type of baby bottles to buy? Please help!

we used to use dr. brown's, mostly because our son was a bit colicky. Hard to clean but well worth it, they have glass and plactic ones, plastic ones are alos BPA, PVC, lead and phthalate free.

Wow, so much research over a baby bottle. Im heavily pregnant and all I've bought is a box of huggies diapers , baby wipes , and borrowed baby clothes from my older sisters first pregnancy. I was feeling so content :O reading this made me feel like I don't know anything about anything .

We didn't do most of this research until after my baby was born. We had picked the glass ones just cuz they were the only glass ones that were available where we registered. But in the first few weeks we just used the Gerber BPA free ones cuz we thought the glass ones would be too big. But when we switched to the proper glass ones, there were no issues. Neither were there nipple confusion issues, AH.
