Which book would you?

Other than books of a religious origin/value… which is one book you would want to pass on to the next generation (your own children or nephews nieces etc) and why?

Re: Which book would you?

SO no one thinks there is a piece of literature out there that must be passed on???

Re: Which book would you?

I like several books, but one important one I really liked was, "Tuesdays with Morrie." It is about a guy who is dying of Lou Gehrig's disease, where he basically cant take care of himself and has to rely on others. It's just beautiful the way he spoke about life and death. Basically, the author had him as a professor in school, and had lost touch with him. He got back in touch with him a few months or so before his death, and this book is about the conversations they used to have. It's very touching.

Re: Which book would you?

"Flowers For Algernon"
It is about a person who is mentally subnormal, gradually improves to become a genius, and then gradually becomes subnormal again.
I felt surprised and sad knowing how cruelly, we, the *normal *people act in our daily lives.
I asked my children to read it so as to enable them to become more sensitive to handicapped people.

Re: Which book would you?

Novel:

'Midnight's Children' - Salman Rushdie. Because it is the ultimate sub-continental tale.

Short Story:

'Khol Do' - Sadat Hasan Manto. (to be immediately followed by Nazeer Akbar Abadi's poem 'Adami')

Re: Which book would you?

I love midnights children- though wouldnt my head be chopped off if i were to openly display his works in Pakistan?

To date- i feel that i must introduce the works of Kahlil Gibran to the next generation. I have been moved and intellectually stimulated many times at many points of my life by those prose and paras.

Re: Which book would you?

Well, I bought 'Midnight's Children' openly in one of the most conservative cities of Pakistan. :)

Though I am pretty sure the bookseller wasn't aware of the name of the author he was selling - afterall, it was spelled in large E N G L I S H letters.

Re: Which book would you?

:bukbuk: … tragically humorous!

‘Midnight’s Children’ is as maliciously against Pakistanis as ‘Satanic Verses’ is against Muslims. While defending his freedom of expression, Mr Rushdi, or for that matter anybody else, has no right to insult peolpe. This is not artistic. This is downright perverse and provokes other people to cross the limits of civility.

Re: Which book would you?

He is not against Pakistanis at all. I loved "Ground beneath her feet" - it is so lyrical and beautiful.

Re: Which book would you?

i will pass all the novels i have read on to my children, n granchildren..

Re: Which book would you?
