Re: where to go?

will any of u recommend australia instead?

Re: where to go?

How do you include Imperial in the list, but not Harvard or Stanford? Aren't they the same standard universities?

If you want lots of desis to hang out, then you need to go to a university in a large city. I don't know much about where the universities you have listed are located specifically.

Re: where to go?

i happen to come across an issue raised on the matter a few days ago... hope it helps.

Choosing the right place to study

When it comes to choosing a course or university to study at, it can be a big decision to make. For a start, it may be the first time that you are not surrounded by your friends, or you may even be living away from home for the first time.

Rather than looking on this as daunting, it is also a pretty exciting time as you get to meet new people, learn new things and have different experiences.

It is also worth bearing in mind that you will be studying somewhere new for two, three or maybe even four years, so you need to be sure you are going to the right place for you.

What you can do

Before you decide on a place to study, ask yourself these following questions. If you are happy with the answers you get from most of these questions then chances are that you'll be happy studying there:

  • What are the entry requirements for the course?
  • Do the subjects really motivate me and interest me?
  • Does the course build on my real strengths?
  • What quality of jobs do graduates get when they leave? Are they the sort I'd like?
  • What reputation does this course and university have, particularly with employers?
  • What learning approaches are used? What is the balance between lectures and seminars; theoretical and practical work and group and independent study? Is this my preferred way?
  • How flexible is the course?
  • What are the facilities offered by the college or university, including special needs if necessary?
  • What level of personal one-to-one support am I given?
  • Is there a strong focus on developing employability skills as well as academic excellence?
  • How can the institution help me find quality work experience?
  • Does it meet my other preferences - geographically, socially, people and entertainment wise?
  • What are the social events and societies on offer?
  • Do they have an open day that I could attend?

Try and speak to people who are already studying at the places that you are looking at and ask them what they think of it. They may be people who have the same hobbies and interests as you so if you know that they enjoy it at a certain place, then chances are that you will enjoy it too.

Re: where to go?

sabeila... well canada is my last choice because of its weather and job oppurtunities.
legbreakgoogly.. tell me about life in London for pakistanis. Also have things changed since the bombings?

Re: where to go?

Your criteria should be the quality of education and future job opportunities. You do yourself a great disservice by seeking the comforts of a known social group (desis) as your criterion for university level education. Broaden your horizons -- take your best to new a cultural and learn about theirs. It's a rewarding experience that you'll cherish all your life.

Re: where to go?

I dunt know.. Im a shy person and its not so easy for me to make new friends.I have chosen these universities because of their quality of education and future job oppurtunities. Now im looking at my 3rd prefernce.. a Social life with fellow Desis and ofcourse people from other cultures. From what ive heard, foreign students are not too friendly with Asians(specifically Britishers) and therefore I'd prefer to go to place with more desis around.

Re: where to go?

^ why do you think so?

Re: where to go?

Anam - Welcome to GS.

Its good that you are thinking and considering different prespective to decide (on one of the biggest choices of your life). I think its hard to recommend you a place when we don't know your goals (and financial situation).

Doing economics degree is not your goal. Its just a step to get to your goal.

Re: where to go?

University of Michigan baby:dhimpak: Anam you’ll find desi ppl here…its very diverse!

Edited out comment about a removed post

Re: where to go?

^ thnx..

Re: where to go?

Look in to University of Manchester, its a nice place to study with alot of Asians (Pakistani/Bangladeshi people around) and fairly good job oppurtunites. Plus university rating is also good and its very visible that uni of man is working hard towrds its goal to be in top ten of the world by 2015 or 2020.

Another important thing is that living is also reasonable as compare to London.

There no as such effects of 7/7 but must not travel alone at nigths.

If u r interested in UK for this session u must hurry up !

Re: where to go?

Some of the constitution bodies of the Federal University of London are up to 50% Desi!

Re: where to go?

U Michigan is great, the area is loaded with Arabs though... i don't recall there being a huge desi populations. You will find Berkeley almost as tough to get into as Stanford, especially if you have no volunteer/community service, although universities cut a bit of a break to international students because you guys pay more tuition than the rest of us. If you don't like Canada due to the weather, you most likely won't like either Chicago or Michigan.

U. of Chicago would not be my first choice in that area - I would go with Northwestern. Also, Penn State is a good choice. It is an Ivy League school but a bit easier to get into than the others, and has excellent programs.
