21 days is cutting it very fine. We are just lucky it got done. Also when my mum went the electricity situation wasn't too bad. It would go off for 3 hours a day in KHI, but now it is gradually getting worse. Obviously the more time you have the easier it will be. If you can I would go for 6 or 8 weeks. Don't place your order for clothes/lehnga and then leave them to it or come back. Make sure it is made while you are there and while you can supervise. It doesn't matter whether you get it from a normal shop, a boutique or a designer. The principal is the same- trust NO-ONE and keep on top of them!
Do your research before you go and know what is in style and approximate prices for things.
Also, don't try and split your trip up into going so many places, otherwise you won't get much done. It takes time to familiarise yourself with one city and then once you get the hang of it do all your ordering from one city. Otherwise your orders may not be completed by the time you need to go back.
My mother ordered my lehnga, formals and silk banarsi suits and jewellery etc from Karachi. While those orders were underway she went to Lahore to visit her sister for a week. While she was in Lahore she would call the boutiques in Karachi every other day and remind them to get on with her order and make sure it was done on time. In Lahore she ordered 16 plain/simple silk and cotton suits (8 for her and 8 for me).(price range from 3000-5500 max) She went to a tailor recommended by our friends at the back of liberty. He had them all stitched and ready in 4 days! And this is not designer!
So sorry for the haphazard and slow responses. I will write down the exact addresses and numbers of the tailors and shops and post here insha'allah.
Oh, one other thing. My mum said that tailors do much better quality stitching and fitting of suits compared to the boutique people. She said that she wished she had given all of the suits to the tailor because they use better zips and the fit turns out much better. Alhamdulillah when she brought everything back to England, the fit was perfect. The tailor had my measurements and a kameez of mine to work with. Some of the clothes she ordered and had stitched for herself from boutiques did not fit her that well.
Make sure that when you receive clothes from the tailor or boutique, you get your measuring tape oiut right there and then and check the measurments are correct. Once you take it away then it becomes a problem to go and give it back.
The advantage of boutiques are that they have cloth, lining/chemise, kaam, pattis and ribbons all there under one roof, and they sort it all out. Otherwise you have to do all the running around yourself, i.e. going to buy plain silk and then have it dyed in the right colour and then finding a nice ribbon or patti to put on and then going to the tailor. It is a LOT of hassle and wastes a LOT of time. So thats why my mum bought most of the suits from boutiques, because she simply did not have the time to do all the running around.
