Where to Go for Wedding Clothes in Karachi

Hi guys,

I want to know about some good places to go to and have shaadi clothes made in karachi. I was wondering which places (non-designer) are good for doing quality kaam and using quality fabrics. My cousin went through Rizwan Moazzam for her wedding dress, and she was horrified with the finished result–the fabrics and the kaam didn’t really equate with the enourmous price tag she paid.

Also, any thoughts about the work from Kehkashan?

My mother just came back from Karachi on Friday, after completed my whole wedding shopping in 4 weeks.

She had my lehnga made from scratch and some heavy formals made from a boutique called Mayaar in Saddar.

She said none of their wedding dresses particularly caught her eye, but it didn't matter for us because we had our own design with an example of the kaam for him to copy. He made the lehnga in 21 days from scratch and charged RS 70 000. He has done the kaam neatly although he did make a mistake or two which he rectified.

She also had 3 very heavy formals made from there, ranging from 14- 18000
The quality of the fabric was good and the embroidery was very delicate. The tailoring and fit is also very good.

She also went to Banaras town for silk banarsi suits and saris. I will ask her and find out more for you.

Re: Where to Go for Wedding Clothes in Karachi

Oh wow! 21 days! That's so fast! Everyone keeps telling me it takes these darzis 6 to 8 months, while others say it takes 3--so I've been really confused.

I too have my own design that I want made, although my mom insists that I get a ready-made one because she's afraid my design will turn out bad. I've looked through countless wedding dresses online, and just like in your case, nothing has really caught my eye.

Did your mom pick out your fabric before giving it in for the kaam?

I remember going to Banaras back in 2005, and they really do have some nice stuff, so I can definitely agree on your taste.

Thanks so much again, I really appreciate the help. I'm totally clueless!! My family is very unfamiliar with pakistan, and so it's so hard to know where to shop and who to trust with clothes and what not.

Thank you!!

Hey, i was just reading your post, im planning on going pakistan for my wedding shopping alot of people have reccomended karachi to me, but i was also planning on going to lahore, islamabad or will it be a watsed trip if i can get everything from karachi?

But i dont have a clue where to start! :S, 21 days is excellent to make a whole lengha have you got any pics of ur lengha please upload :)

21 days is cutting it very fine. We are just lucky it got done. Also when my mum went the electricity situation wasn't too bad. It would go off for 3 hours a day in KHI, but now it is gradually getting worse. Obviously the more time you have the easier it will be. If you can I would go for 6 or 8 weeks. Don't place your order for clothes/lehnga and then leave them to it or come back. Make sure it is made while you are there and while you can supervise. It doesn't matter whether you get it from a normal shop, a boutique or a designer. The principal is the same- trust NO-ONE and keep on top of them!

Do your research before you go and know what is in style and approximate prices for things.

Also, don't try and split your trip up into going so many places, otherwise you won't get much done. It takes time to familiarise yourself with one city and then once you get the hang of it do all your ordering from one city. Otherwise your orders may not be completed by the time you need to go back.

My mother ordered my lehnga, formals and silk banarsi suits and jewellery etc from Karachi. While those orders were underway she went to Lahore to visit her sister for a week. While she was in Lahore she would call the boutiques in Karachi every other day and remind them to get on with her order and make sure it was done on time. In Lahore she ordered 16 plain/simple silk and cotton suits (8 for her and 8 for me).(price range from 3000-5500 max) She went to a tailor recommended by our friends at the back of liberty. He had them all stitched and ready in 4 days! And this is not designer!

So sorry for the haphazard and slow responses. I will write down the exact addresses and numbers of the tailors and shops and post here insha'allah.

Oh, one other thing. My mum said that tailors do much better quality stitching and fitting of suits compared to the boutique people. She said that she wished she had given all of the suits to the tailor because they use better zips and the fit turns out much better. Alhamdulillah when she brought everything back to England, the fit was perfect. The tailor had my measurements and a kameez of mine to work with. Some of the clothes she ordered and had stitched for herself from boutiques did not fit her that well.

Make sure that when you receive clothes from the tailor or boutique, you get your measuring tape oiut right there and then and check the measurments are correct. Once you take it away then it becomes a problem to go and give it back.

The advantage of boutiques are that they have cloth, lining/chemise, kaam, pattis and ribbons all there under one roof, and they sort it all out. Otherwise you have to do all the running around yourself, i.e. going to buy plain silk and then have it dyed in the right colour and then finding a nice ribbon or patti to put on and then going to the tailor. It is a LOT of hassle and wastes a LOT of time. So thats why my mum bought most of the suits from boutiques, because she simply did not have the time to do all the running around.

Re: Where to Go for Wedding Clothes in Karachi

Make sure you tell them to complete the orders a week or a few days before you really need them. Delays are common in Pak.

Also electricity situation is much worse in Lahore. It goes off about 12 hours a day. One hour on and one hour off.

Re: Where to Go for Wedding Clothes in Karachi

My lehnga was based on somebody else's that I know. She got married in Pak a couple of years ago and had the exact colour combo and kaam that I wanted. My mum borrowed her blouse and pouch which had the kaam on it and took it to pak. She showed it to the boutique and all they had to do was copy the embroidery. I changed the style of the blouse and had it made long and open style to update it.

I would not trust them to copy out of a magazine, as you won't know what the embroidery will be like close-up. It is too much of a risk to take. In that case I would choose embroidery out of their shop, so you know exactly what you'll be getting.

Re: Where to Go for Wedding Clothes in Karachi

I endorse the embroiders sitting in Gulf Shopping Mall as opposed to Kehkashan. I got an Asifa and Nabeel replica made from a small embroidery shop in Gulf Shopping Mall. I took a picture and he made the design on paper and showed it to me. I also got a formal dress made from Kurtaba Market in Bahadarabad.

For my wedding i am getting almost all my semi formals and formals made from Gulf as well. A few are from Ghousia Market in Gizri. The only problem is Ghousia folks dont deliver on time.

For my bridal, i also consulted gulf embroiders and also went to tariq road- in particular Rabi centre. Check out Makkah Silk emporium on the 2nd floor of Rabi Centre 9 not the shop on the ground floor) as well.

Good Luck.

thank you. :)

Re: Where to Go for Wedding Clothes in Karachi

have you been to Rim Jhim in Clifton or Jabeen's on Tariq Road? Jabeen's is the bigger shop but they both have equally beautiful things.

Re: Where to Go for Wedding Clothes in Karachi

Yes, i did. :) Great stuff but i feel that because they have so many customers, the designs are more or less replicated according to the customer's preference. Also, everything bridal is quite "bhara" hua and i want a dress that i can wear after wedding too and not pack in a box and put it away. I don't want to spend a chunk of money for a dress i will wear just one day. Yes, it is my wedding and ofcourse it's special and big, but to me, it is my life post wedding that i am more concerned about and concentrating on. Anything too bhara hua means death for me. It defies what i am as a person, a person who believes in simplicity and non-ostentatious. I give my mom the palpitations because of my thought process as she thinks i won't be "dulhan" enough with this attitude. But i tell her, i'll be sitting on the stage and next to the groom so i will be the "dulhan" and it does not matter what other's think. I am glad my husband MashaAllah shares my ideas and sentiments. makes things easier. AlHamdulilAllah. :)

Re: Where to Go for Wedding Clothes in Karachi

If u have the support of ur huby then what else matters. Everyone has their on choice, and the same way if a bride wants to be decked out that is her choice and if u want to be simple that is ur choice.

Reassure ur mum with jewelry ,makeup etc a bride often looks a "bride" and ppl will talk regardless of whether ur simple dressed or dripping in jewels.

Re: Where to Go for Wedding Clothes in Karachi

Ofcourse, everyone has their own thing. :) I think i'I'll be all right. In weddings you can't always have things your way and I am not the kind who'D trample on my loved ones's sentiments either. :)
