why not just use an electric shaver, does the same thing, the hair does not know what sharp object cut it.
Yup. I used 0 number clipper on my daughter's head. Very easy and safe.

No, you dont need shaving cream, buy a clipper that comes with different size attachment - any beauty supply store would have one. I suggest that hair/head should be as dry as possible. Start with bigger size attachment (number 1 or 2 maybe) to trim the hair down to smaller size and then switch to zero size.
I made them lie on carpet on top of spread out newspaper to catch all the hair (so we can weigh them to give money to poors). For back. my mom or wife hold them on baby face down and support the forehead of the baby with their hands. After we were done, my wife used some oil to oil up their skin.
You will find that the whole process is very soothing for babies. Vibration of clipper on their head often make them go to sleep :D

My MIL suggested we soak some saffron in warm breastmilk and rub over shaved head after the process. It's supposed to be an antiseptic and warming. I believe it's sunnah as well.

Where is the proof of this unclean and napaak bit ? I have a living proof of what I said , my sisters head was never shaved when she was born but she has Mashallah thick long hair.
uncle jee, i'm not debating the fact that shaving your hair makes it grow back thicker :p it's all in our genes how our hair grows.
korisn - if you still feel uncomfortable about shaving your baby's hair, why not wait a little bit longer until he's a little older? i don't think there's a hard and fast rule about when the hair should be shaved by.

we have always done this at home…and we’ve used both electric trimmer and a single blade.
and the really funny part is that BIL and hubby, who are regular shavers and have been known to be quite precise in their efforts, are unable to do as good a job as sister and I, who never use a blade. 
I have no idea if shaving a baby’s head encourages hair to grow back thicker and fuller, though I suspect it does cuz that’s what it does to a guy’s beard, no?
And its funny how similar TLK’s and our backgrounds are…we still weigh the baby’s hair and donate the equivalent in chaandi (silver) to the poor. And we put saffron but diluted in just milk…the breastmilk part I was never aware of.

We have done tind of my son and daughter many times. Tools included scissors, comb, clipper, trimmer and
disposable razor.
I have done it mostly in bathroom tub except for once when I did my son at living room’s carpet while he was asleep. In fact he wake up in the middle and then did not let me do the other side. He remaind HALF-GANJA for next 4-5 days (at the age of around 1 year) 
I have videos of the whole process (of son and daughter’s ganja karaiee) and I’ll duly hand it over to my baho and damaad
