I have an answer. But the answer would only make sense to those who actually lived in Karachi. Those who get all the info from daily ummat wont understand the answer.
Funds of MQM come from donations. I am not denying that some street level MQM workers do not do bhatta khori but even to this day, when families come to Jinnah Ground to attend any MQM activity and there is donation time, even ladies and kids give away their pocket money. If you think that whole operation of a major party is being run through the bhatta collected from few shops of Karachi then you are highly mistaken.
But as I said, you are not going to believe it cause that was not the answer you wanted to hear.
I am surprised. Do you know there is no way out to live in and work without giving extortion. It is not street crime. It is high profile crime.
And Altaf is not alone.
Now every politician with some name is billionaire.

Now as to how PPP and PML-N collect their funds, its through their MNAs and MPAs. Every ticket is sold, rather even before one can be in a position of applying for a seat, people pay money to get close to top leadership of these parties
and why those MPA and MNA's would pay for those seats, cause they know that after being elected, they can looto awaam and Pakistan with both hands. Whom do you think is a bigger criminal is then? Those who ate up the nation from inside out in last so many decades, our bhuttos and zardaris and musharrafs and sharifs, or those who force public to pay 1000 rs every month? I guess all of them are equal, although MQM did not build any palaces or have huge swiss bank accounts. That is not a justification of MQM's act, that is just to say that everyone is a criminal at some level.

I agree. I am not denying. But pointing finger towards MQM in every thread of PA for every unethical thing that is happening in Pakistan looks like such a blindfolded biased agenda that it starts reeking soon.

what i fail to understand is…usually people (except a few) are in consensus over how evil the all the politicians are…but somehow…people end up defending the party which represnets their ethnicity…

I am not defending MQM. I am just saying what I saw when I used to live in Karachi. I like to beleive what I saw more than what daily ummat publishes none of whose editors probably ever entered Karachi.

MQM is the biggest "bhatta khoor" of Karachi not doubt about it but this does not mean rest of the parties are farishtey, problem yee hai k they dont have any "control" over other areas. Whichever party has influence in some area, they collect bhatta from there.
Personally I have paid bhatta to MQM, MQM Haqiqi and PPI. And for people who dont know what PPI is it was a party planted to take on MQM in 90s. All of the local Punjabi Pakhroon Itehad (PPI) badmashs are now either in PML(N) or ANP.
