Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years ...

This is a very important question usually part of most interviews at pre-management level …

What is the best way to respond to this question .. coz I know it may sound too easy a question to fret about , but the fact is that if you respond with the usual answers like "I look at my self as the owner of a businss " or " I will be here loyal to the company with considerable professional growth "

These kind of answers are either classed as being over ambitious or if lack of enthusiasm …
So how do you get yourself out of this question with success?
What message should we be trying to put across to the interviewers ?

Re: Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years ...

But I think that is the problem guys .. my career revolves around interviewing people and about 85% of them give me the same answer "I see myself managing people or owning a business or heading a department "

I have seen line managers become very worried about such answers coz they start questioning the ambitious nature of the candidate .. they feel the candidate may not be in touch with reality and if they have such huge dreams of getting somewhere , clearly they will get bored of their current role in 2 years .. etc etc ..

To get to the head of the department level or management level people may need more then 5 years in the company ... if they are way too passionate about becoming a manager , line managers feel threatened that you may leave the company in a few years time if you didnt achieve your ambitions .. that scares them ..

So what is that answer on the middle frame that will tell them of your ambitions but at the same time doesnt give them the extreme feel ?

In your chair! Shows that you have ambition. And often it breaks the ice too. Nothing wrong with being ambition as it shows u have potential and the motivation to push yourself and with the drive the company could possibly grow too!
