Where do you keep your television?

We all have TV’s in our homes…or at least most of us.

Where do you keep your TV?

Family room? Living room? Kitchen?

Where do you think it should be kept?

And for those who choose not to have a TV, why or why don’t you have one?

Do you find it more beneficial to not have a TV?

Re: Where do you keep your television?

Currently, I only have 2 TV’s in my house…one upstairs in my kids’ game room, along with their Xbox and other games and one downstairs in my master bedroom.

We also have a media/theater room upstairs, with a projector and 88’ movie screen, but I don’t have cable/tv channels hooked up in there…we will only use it for “family movie night”…

I was planning on buying another TV for our family room/great room downstairs, but I’m double minded about that now. In my old house, I was used to having the TV on in the background constantly while I cooked/worked in the kitchen, but for the past 3 months I’ve been in my new house, I haven’t missed it at all! I usually do all my TV watching after my kids are asleep anyway, so having one in my master bedroom only suffices for now. Also, I’m usually upstairs with my kids supervising what they are watching anyway…I may have to rethink getting one for downstairs though when my MIL comes to visit…she can’t climb stairs and needs to have her jaadoo tv/pakistani/indian shows lol!

Re: Where do you keep your television?

family room only. Barely watch it but do turn on for background noise.

Two tv’s. I’ve on family room, and one in the kitchen area.

Re: Where do you keep your television?

1tv in family room

Re: Where do you keep your television?

1 in family room and 1 in my bedroom (rarely use the bedroom wala though)

Re: Where do you keep your television?

3 TVs. One in the living room (connected to laptop, jadoo and DVD player), which we use all the time. One in my parents’ master bedroom upstairs. That one is hooked to the living room TV, so whatever channel is on downstairs, they can watch it in their room even if the downstairs TV is turned off.
3rd TV is in the recreation room downstairs and connected to PS3. We hardly ever use that one.

Re: Where do you keep your television?

We have one in the family room downstairs and one in the kitchen. The kitchen one is used most often.

The one in the family is rarely turned on.

Re: Where do you keep your television?

So everyone has a TV?

I’ve met a few people who choose not to have TV’s in their homes…wonder if we have anyone here like that…

Re: Where do you keep your television?

Tv in the family room, my parents’ room, and my brother’s room.

I haven’t watched TV in more than a year. Just haven’t felt like it; it started feeling like noise to me. Taking the break from it helped me to develop my spiritual knowledge/side; it can feel like a purging. I will occasionally watch movies online, but more often it’s lectures and documentaries. Recently, I’ve been watching docs on mind control being done thru television…trying to get viewers to head in a more materialistic direction…and I can see that with certain programs like reality tv shows, Kardashians, etc…some of them are contributing toward the moral decline of society. News channels can display misinformation, sometimes deliberately to skew our views.

I’m not suggesting that one avoid the TV altogether because it has its benefits. But the saying that “Don’t believe everything you see on TV” defo has merit, but that can apply to other sources of media besides television as well. It depends on the programs…depends on whether one takes time to do their own research to get multiple perspectives on issues., etc. For children or the youth especially…I think it’s important for parents to monitor what they’re watching as there are some unhealthy trends and subliminal messages sent thru seemingly benign programs.

Re: Where do you keep your television?

We didn’t have TV most of the time, in our childhood.
I’m not into tv watching and neither are my kids. My husband watches it once in a while but that’s only news channels. Our TV is in family room only and as per hubby, people watch their tv, while our tv watches us. :hehe:
If it were up to me, I wouldn’t have tv in our home. I’m glad that my kids are much more into reading books and playing sports.

Re: Where do you keep your television?

^I have a friend who has MA two very adorable toddler boys…one aged 3 and the other aged two. She’s raising them in a way that they’re closer to nature…running/playing outside, observing the natural world. Yeah of-course they play with cars and blocks and such…but she doesn’t allow them to get too attached to virtual games. So she doesn’t depend heavily on them to silence the kids or keep them occupied. I know that it won’t always continue like this because as the kids grow older, they will become more exposed to that. But she tries to keep it varied.

My youngest just turned 6 and the eldest will turn 15 in a month, inshaAllah. And we have been like this from the beginning alhamdulillah.

If we ever decide to use our tv it’s for selected DVDs or for kids to play on their wii and play station etc. I don’t like to expose my kids to the usual garbage most channels present (in Pakistan at least).

Re: Where do you keep your television?

We have a TV in our family room, and it’s in clear view from the kitchen, I usually have it on while I cook. I personally don’t watch too much TV but occasionally I’ll just tune in for the sake of passing time.

Re: Where do you keep your television?

In communal spaces, we have one in the lounge and one in the kitchen (mainly used by my mum, to watch her cooking shows while cooking). We also have one in each of the bedrooms except for my parent’s bedroom as they read somewhere that watching the telly before bed results in lower quality sleep (although, I don’t know how accurate that is) and refuse to have one in their room.

Re: Where do you keep your television?

Not only limited to TV, but also includes things like cell phones, computers, etc. Supposedly the light emitted by these things hinders sleep as it diminishes production of melatonin. Apart from that, I’ve also read that TV in the bedroom/kitchen prevents bonding as the attention is more on the screen.

Re: Where do you keep your television?

^That’s quite interesting, especially regarding melatonin production.

Where do you keep your television?

One in the living room which my parents watch for news and some crime shows. One tv is in my parents room but it hasn’t been used for months or maybe yrs.

I don’t watch tv as I watch every thing on YouTube or download my shows. Every thing is online these days. Therefore, I do think that when I have my own home, I won’t own a tv for sure.

Heck we don’t even use the DVD player any more!

Re: Where do you keep your television?

You can get melatonin supplements if you’re having trouble sleeping. I find they are more effective in inducing sleepiness when the lights are off or dimmer. If I’m using my ipad or cell before sleeping, i feel it does hinder sleep..it’s like my mind is still active. Another reason can also be that before bedtime reading…can linger on your mind…you think about what you’ve read/watched…so your mind is still active.

Re: Where do you keep your television?

Growing up, my parents had a TV in their bedroom, and a TV in the family living area. Under no circumstances were we allowed to turn on the TV and watch whatever we liked. And we actually listened to our parents.

We grew up with books and lots of outdoor activities, and other than a few TV shows, and the nightly news, that was our interaction with TV. I don’t remember myself, sibs, or cousins being glued in front of the TV.

Got married, and TV was not an important part of my life or my hubby.

Children came, and I wanted my children to spend time with books, puzzles, games and the outdoors. BUT since we did not have a TV in the house we saw the children would sit like zombies in front of the TV at other folks homes. So we got a TV, and the children were allowed to watch 30 mins/1 hour a day, usually PBS. Problem solved, as now they would function as human beings when visiting others. Other than that, they spent many hours playing outside, going to the lake, swimming, visiting every museum in the city, reading, etc. They had MA a great idyllic childhood.

Internet came, other children were born.

  1. We have one TV in the family room, computer and laptops too. At the moment the children are playing games on the laptops with the TV turned off. My habits have changed considerably now. I watch TV shows on the net only, do not have the capacity to watch an hour on the TV , through boring ads etc.

Children are more on the net too, use the TV more for Xbox/games etc than for watching. We do watch some shows etc together as a family, or we’ll hook up the laptop to the TV.
