Re: Where do you draw the ___?
Never ever in any book have I read this comment from any Suhabi (companion of the Prophet) to any person: "Live and let live", "Why are you so judgmental ?", " Why are you so conservative ?", "Why are you so narrow minded"...etc. There was no concept of "non of your business". Each and every bit of their deeds visible to others was also their business in order to correct each other, for the ultimate business of Allah (swt). Even though 24 hours they kept encouraging each other to do good, they kept discouraging laziness towards the orders of Allah (swt), and kept raising each others moral and level of commitment towards Allah (swt) and at the same time reducing commitment towards oneself. There was no break for oneself, let alone "enjoying" and "entertaining oneself" through naughty jokes with na-mehrams. Common people used to think of them to be mad in Allah's love. All the time either talking about Allah (swt) and the teachings of his Prophet (saw) or listening to it or acting upon it. They used to apply breaks towards worldly benefits and apply accelerator in getting ahead in obeying Allah's orders and spreading it. All their organs were over consumed in obeying Allah (swt)...
Definitely if anyone of present age see them in real life, they would call them extremist, fanatic,..etc. and if the commentator is a muslim like me, then would definitely be severely beaten by Hazrat Umar (r.a), who had 0% tolerance for a "Muslim" to express his own ideas in contrast to the teachings of the Prophet (Saw), directly or indirectly. That is why they deserved to be with the Prophet (saw) and we deserve to be in present age. After doing everything for Allah (Swt) and the Prophet (Saw), they thought they haven't done anything. We haven't done anything worth mentioning for Allah (swt) and the Prophet (saw) yet we behave as if we have done everything,

No one quoted those words as one of the sahaba's (AS), see this is where your imposing cz just because the words judgmental, conservative were'nt used then, makes it wrong to discuss such things? We are free to discuss whatever we want to understand things better.
A very good post. But do you follow all this in your real life...? We are all aware of the theory, how much do we follow is what my question is directed at.
Oh and I don't agree with your stand on recreation in our religion. To enjoy is not haram in Islam.
Re: Where do you draw the ___?
There’s always a threshold. In some situations, this threshold is determined by religion, in others you just feel it in your heart. And a great quote from Jaanwar here:
Couldn’t have put it better myself :k:
Re: Where do you draw the ___?
i will never tolerate that kind of behaviour even for a minute.
Re: Where do you draw the ___?
I'm not so concerned about where I draw the line. More, what the line is drawn with. Pencil rather than permanent marker, that way you can erase and redraw as you learn, grow, and gain better understanding.
Re: Where do you draw the ___?
Wasn't the purpose of religion to standardise everything for everyone? What's right for me should be right for you, what's wrong for me should be wrong for you too IF you're of the same religion as me?
Why should the standards, the limits be different for each person? What's the purpose of religion then? I'm not saying it is NOT ok for people to think differently that I do. I'm just saying religion actually makes everything much much easier for us. What's excusable, what's not excusable, what's right, what's wrong, what's acceptable, what isn't acceptable is all laid out for us clearly.
Re: Where do you draw the ___?
^ Well said.
Re: Where do you draw the ___?
@ bbc good post
Yet, i will repeat myself that we all know what are we suppose to do. I was hoping to hear more on what do we actually do and how we think in the present times since there are so many things (fitnas n stuff) to counter. But good enough.
@el_topo , true, flexibility and openness is also very important. We can't say because the sahaba's (as) didn't use soap it's haram.
Re: Where do you draw the ___?
i have a standard/principles made up in my head and i live by it.
Re: Where do you draw the ___?
In your life how do you draw the line, Between right and wrong? Between humor and indecency? Between excusable and inexcusable? (when it comes to others actions) In the light of what you really are like in real life (not how you want to be); What are the standards and boundaries you have set for yourself regarding these and why?
Im not a conservative person but I do have the sense to know between right and wrong. There should be no confusion about these things because like someone already said...they've been laid out.
They question is how do you distinguish? Well, my method is of course my religion...its all Ive ever known. If you cannot tell your mother, you probably should not do it...lol.
Humor and decency...same. Off color jokes are funny but we all know its wrong to joke around like that. Whether or not we indulge is a different story.
Excusable and inexcusable...again...same thing. There are not many gray areas left for us to worry about.
I posted about this a long time ago too. Why do we blur the lines between right and wrong?
Re: Where do you draw the ___?
I am often trying to remain calm and deep down I try my best not to step on others… but sometimes people just shpw the red rag and all I see is red… thats when all tact goes out the window.
But at least I try to be good… and if I stumble in this task I know you guys will be standing ready with the… :mirch:
Re: Where do you draw the ___?
I get what you’re saying. But despite all the guidelines, all of us draw lines differently, human nature can’t be standardised. Sure, religion makes it clear what is off limits and what is allowed, and to an extent I do follow that. Do I abstain from the major sins? Yes. Do I fulfil the faraiz? Well..notwithstanding the occasional missed prayer, yes. Those are the lines that I do observe. But then there is a whole host of other things that I do, which might not be looked on favourably. Listening to music, watching movies, backbiting, x-rated humour, watching women’s tennis (
) etc. to name a few. In most daily activities people tend to draw their own lines, which are either guided by the extent of their religiousness or upbringing and that is different for everyone. You can’t judge people for drawing their own lines where they feel comfortable.
At the end of the day, at least I know my limits and there are certain things I’m not comfortable doing. I’m sure in a perfect world ALL our limits would be derived from religion but we’re not perfect, in some way or the other we do deviate and that’s what being human is all about. And given the world we live in today that is totally understandable. Maybe I don’t strive for perfection hard enough and but I have the desire to and I know as long as I have the little voice in my head telling me what’s wrong, inshallah one day I will.
