Where do thoughts come from?

Where do thoughts come from? Do we have complete control over our thoughts?

Re: Where do thoughts come from?

from environment we live in.. No control in totality

Re: Where do thoughts come from?

just the environment Muqa ?

Re: Where do thoughts come from?

environment is quite big term. no?

Re: Where do thoughts come from?

.
:hmmm:
Thoughts come from imagination (wht we imagine abt a specific thing) n r always on the basis of our experiences we faced/heard by someone/hv seen in our past
So they r always related to our past same like worries related to the future
A person being sad, afraid, needy leads his imagination to think negatively n person being happy, confident etc leads his imagination to think positive
I think ppl reflect themselves by their actions of wht they r made of ( thoughts )

As for the controlling our thoughts, if the thoughts r positive, I dnt think therez any need to control them, they make a person struggler

Unfortunately we r nt capable of control all of our thoughts but yea we can control most of them by practicing n that depends on will power of one.
The prb with the thoughts is, if u dnt cntrol them they usually control u n overcome u, n that wht makes a person weak, sick n mentally disturbed
One cant control his/her thoughts by the night, but yea they can easily hv the idea wht type of thoughts actually disturbing them
And one more thing, controlling ur thoughts dznt mean stop thinking or make ur mind stop working, controlling also means to divert ur thoughts to some other things which dnt diturb u by getting urself involved in other things

Wo kehte hain
Apni soch ko qaboo mein rakho ku k inse khyalat bnte hain
Khyalat alfaz aur alfaz amal bntey hain
Aur aamaal kirdaar aur kirdaar shakhsiyt bn jati hai

n off course jb aisa ho jaey tou phr cntrol krna ziada mushkil ho jata hai, so its always more easy to cntrol in the beginning

Muqwee knows all about it because he posts threads that boggle an ordinary mind like mine! :)

Re: Where do thoughts come from?

There are other factors too. For example, 2 people in same environment could think entirely different depending upon their nature.

psyah, what is wrong with your post #8?
its displaying gs site within it.

Re: Where do thoughts come from?

I had written a response, I copied it, reloaded and when I pasted it - it posted the GS site like a nested url in a frame - :bummer:

If we had control over our thoughts, then it would be counted towards our sawab and gunah when we had a good or a bad thought

Re: Where do thoughts come from?

What I had written before was that thought does not come from the environment … stimuli come from the environment in the form of photons for everything physically visible, in the form of heat, pressure, adhesion and cohesion for touch sensitivity, in the form of chemical bonding with olfactory sensors for smelling and with the taste buds on the tongue for tasting, in the form of sound waves for hearing. All of these do not generate thought - they are ways the external world comes in to physical contact with us … These in turn generate internal subconscious responses which will then be collected via the heart and brain to create “conscious response” - that is a thought … it comes from within - in the absence of being able to measure the ruh or soul it appears that the brain is where “we” are … however, religion refer to the core or essence to be from the heart … and really we can today deduce that the heart does have independent operations that do not include the brain - certain processes seem to be not only happening subconsciously but also preemptively and it means that there is something else that originates the thought forming process - but it becomes entirely us who own the thought when it condenses in our conscious sphere …

It is also not necessary that stimuli from the environment cause us think - we can think quite independently from the environment albeit our frames of reference will be from what we have learnt from the environment … such as in dreams …

Secondly, although thoughts appear and crystalise without much control the lucidity and depth and dwelling of thoughts is in our control … This is why by saying astaghfirullah and other invocations we can eliminate passing rogue evil thoughts and by deeply focusing and mediating we can fine tune our God Consciousness in a way that we programme or positively teach ourselves to know how to intuitively give regard to the good thoughts and halt the evil ones … by using emotional responses we can rebuke ourselves and by praising Allah (SWT) we can remain humble for all good things we think …

Surat Saba’ [34:50] - The Noble Qur’an - ??? ???

@blacklisted prince - thoughts are the superclass - imagination is a type of thought process that does not include external stimuli at the point of experience. Imagination is etymologically linked to magic and image … which has the connotation that it has some illusory nature and that it is created or built up to make something unreal perceptively real … unreal does not mean fake or false - because the reality of what is being imagined does not have to be limited to the objective means of measurement … such as faith in God. Faith is an imaginal thought process, but it is not imagination in the sense of being faux or made up … It can be said however that tangible references to thoughts - i.e. the ones where we can build up mental pictures seem to be clearer than the thoughts that are pure feeling such as the ones that are linked to the Presence of God, etc

Re: Where do thoughts come from?

Interesting! You sound a lot like Deepak Chopra!

So, tell me, what about people with schizophrenia? Do you think they aren’t praying enough? Perhaps not reciting the right incantations? Do you think they just need to meditate more?

Re: Where do thoughts come from?

I do believe that the right prayer, sincerity and trying to self heal the mind through exercises can treat the diseases of the mind ... but my caveat is that all of these things are (asbab) "means" entirely unnecessary because God is in Control of everything ... If we take medicine then we do not claim the medicine has cured us, but rather God cured us through the medicine and allowed the curing affects of the medicine to work as not all medicines work all the time on all people ... Likewise, meditation is an exercise - people who do exercise are less likely to get heart disease - but this is due to the patterns/trends God has allowed to develop in this world of "asbab" ... we do not put faith in the exercise - we put faith in God and do the exercise as a means of purification of intent ... So it is like an exchange we surrender by trying to conform to our natural design and since God has nested our best interests in our natural design He rewards us by curing, or other way ... so the in the case of prayer ... even if we are not cured - we are still blessed for being able to turn to God and seek His blessing ... For seeking the blessing of God is the answer as it puts us at the doorstep of the Throne as such ... whereas other people are absorbed in other things, as when they are needless or have their requested granted they leave and get on with their own lives, whereas the one who is still there asking waiting for his wish or prayer to be granted realises that his prayer is not being answered - but it means he can stay facing his Lord and being nearer his Lord for longer ... and that in reality is the greater of the gifts.

I do believe in the past people were given regular incantations, as medicines from the pious sages - in various Attributes of God to recite as medicine for their psychological conditions.

Re: Where do thoughts come from?

i wonder what the function of the larynx was before it was utilized in speech

Re: Where do thoughts come from?

The question came to mind again and I re-visited the thread.

by environment you mean what blacklisted prince said ?

makes sense :hmmm:

Because of different experiences ?

That answers the latter part of the question. Where do you think thoughts come from in the first place ?

Simple words plz :bummer: It went above my head.

Where did that come from ?

Re: Where do thoughts come from?

yes, what BP said and also sometimes one thought is a developed stage of a previous thought. I mean to say its a never-ending and developing process. There is a change in thoughts with the passage of time. Thoughts of a graduate person will be different when the same person was in nursery. so education, exposure, experience, observation, all contribute to the thought process.

Interesting question is if a person is kept in close environment (no access to change, no interaction with others), will he/she be able to improve his thought process or it will totally damage his thought process? take an example of a prisoner in dungeon.

Re: Where do thoughts come from?

Some great works of literature were written in prison. So a prison doesn't stop ones thought process.

Re: Where do thoughts come from?

may be its the age, when people are put in prison. If an 11 year person is put in prison for say 20 years, he may not be able to be as productive in thoughts as those writers who were put in dungeons at later stage (40-50 years age).
