Just curious as I don’t think this is something that is acknowledged in desi communities but drug use is really really REALLY prevalent in high school , university etc and really easy to get ahold of. It was really common to find young people coming to highschool and selling drugs cheap or to find kids growing marijuana and stuff at home so a lot of people tried it and in university, keep on using drugs.
I’m talking about more than occasional drug use, not just experimenting. If someone is not an addict but still has done a lot of drugs, would you be comfortable marrying them? For some reason, drugs are always considered more harmful and addicting than drinking and associated with stupid choices. Would you be afraid they would make detrimental choices again or start doing drugs again? What if they are just doing drugs once in a blue moon?
In highschool there was a common misconception among Muslims; that drugs aren’t haram, only drinking is.
Re: Where do drugs stand in relation to premarital sex?
Sarah now you're scaring me.
Well personally I dont think I would live with a person who is into drugs - blue moon or not. Either he wouldnt be using them at all or he would have to quit and go through a recovery period and so on.
Because if he is into drugs I would say he isnt using his brain and I wont marry anyone who wont use his intelligence. :D
Re: Where do drugs stand in relation to premarital sex?
what is wrong with these morons? where do they get the idea that drugs aren’t haram? idiots i swear… reminds me of those guys who are forever high and sleep around but won’t touch chicken coz “its haram!” …
Re: Where do drugs stand in relation to premarital sex?
That misconception is there because there is an overemphasis on alcohol and premarital sex. Everyone knows about those as being not allowed in Islam, whereas drug use mostly goes unacknowledged even though it is on the rise. It's not just people from lower-classes. I went to a higher SES highschool and many kids did drugs and many did not even come from broken homes. Too much money, too much independance and a basic lack of knowledge about this area.
It is definitely an area that needs to be addressed in mosques and Quran classes and homes. Many kids I knew would do drugs in university, put eye drops in their eyes to get rid of the redness and then go home and read Quran. Their grades were high and their friends were trused by their parents. No one knew.
As for not marrying such a person, my uncle is a former heroin addict and former dentist. He has not been able to get married though he has been clean for more than a decade. I think there is too much of a stigma surrounding drug addiction and use, whereas people are likely to easily forgive former drinking, drugs are seen as much worse, even if only soft drugs were used.
Re: Where do drugs stand in relation to premarital sex?
I don't see waht's so difficult to understand about drugs.
I think it just requires a bit of thinking, which unfortunately, too many people are too lazy to do.
Why is alcohol haram? Logically, because it ruins your judgement. Just one drink affects you, evenn though you wont' be dead drunk with one sip, it'll still cause physiological changes. Why are drugs haram? Because they can ruin your judgement.
Re: Where do drugs stand in relation to premarital sex?
pre-marital sex.. is between two people.. drugs..afftects families, comunities.. everything..
It depends on how its exercised tho...
a druggie (many druggies) live 'normal' lives.. they work, they have families.. this is just a hobby.. then their are addicts who ruin their own lives.. families suffer.. they commit crimes.. so problems are on a larger scale..
pre-marital sex cant be compared to drugs.. on the gunnah-o-meter.. its high up.. but its consented sex between 2 people and doesnt affect anyone.. unless you chose for it to affect people.
Re: Where do drugs stand in relation to premarital sex?
Drugs are quite prevalent amongst high school kids and most recently Muslim kids have started using/selling them too. Although it might be something like weed, but it is sad when I find out about these teenagers from really good families using/selling drugs and their parents don't have a clue.
