if you really want only general knowledge in accounting how about 'accouning for dummies' or 'idiots accounting'. but, if you want a little more knowledge than that get some sort of a short technical course, that'll equip you for bookeeping for a small business.
Yeah you probably want to start out with the dummies books. Otherwise check out your local commerce department they probably have books or links talking about how to take care of a business and suggestions.
Quicken is the most widely used package for small businesses. Though if you are making anywhere decent money you should consider outsourcing the whole accounting stuff unless you plan on not really growing the business.

Thanks for the replies folks, I will look into that book insha'Allah.
hmcq, what would you consider decent money? And outsourcing to where? Thanks.
If you have a growing concern, you can look at payroll and accounting firms such as I guess paychex and HR perhaps. I am not totally sure but they can handle all your employee payments as well as do most of the accounting stuff.
Decent money would be where you are focusing primarily on growing your business and its got more then 3 or 4 employees and perhaps over 200K in sales. It really depends on what you need to be focusing on and where the business is at and what you want to achieve with it. If its gonna remain a rather small setup then you can do most of the work, but if you want to spending most of your time on marketing or selling your products or getting clients then you want to make sure that you dont waste your time on the non essentials.
