how long before my wedding i shud go see a doctor to discuss contraception methods? i’ve read a time frame of 1-6 months & am confused? how long before the birth control pill is effective?
Re: when to visit Dr. before wedding?
i would say atleast 1-2 months before....this will also give you some time to get used to the method youll be using
Re: when to visit Dr. before wedding?
i'd say 6 months before. you don't know how your body will react to the contraception you choose so the earlier you go and start using, the more time there is for you to adjust.
Re: when to visit Dr. before wedding?
^ Exactly.

yaz is effective 2 weeks b4 (thats wht the doc said), but everyone's body's are different and many ppl suffer from reactions (depression, spotting to name a few)--so its better to start few months before.
For the exact date; go to the doctor--have ur hormone levels all checked etc and find the one suitable for you (you might need a combined pill or a progesterone only, something for acne too, for PMS, and cramps etc).
Also, some ppl tend to gain weight....best to know before getting lots of clothes ordered....
Re: when to visit Dr. before wedding?
^ Yeah, at most it's 10 pounds, but it's a possibility.
Re: when to visit Dr. before wedding?
You should see a doctor as soon as possible because spotting/bleeding is a common side effect. The earlier you get started the less side effects you will have at the time of the wedding. You don't be worrying about that kind of stuff on the big day.

i had huge weight gain issues with the depo-provera shot, as well as 6 mths of non-stop spotting. ugh. it was a nightmare. thankfully i'm on yasmin now and it works like a dream mA- no weight gain, no mood swings, no spotting. yay!

i've heard that a lot about depo-provera. poor you :(
has anyone tried the patch?
i work in pharmacy and yasmin seems to be a popular choice. it has a mild diuretic to counteract the puffiness you get from the extra hormones.
i know a few patients who use ortho-evra but it seems that they have to get a replacement patch every few fills. insurance only covers 3 patches every 30 days so they have to pay for the replacement patch out of pocket...it can get expensive if it falls off regularly but at least u don't have to take a pill everyday.
i feel like my body is at the perfect hormonal balance right now (like a decent figure, clear skin) so that's another one of the things i dread about getting married! ugh..
Anyway if u are unsure about which pill suits you go to wdxcyber.com. i have printed out one of the charts from there and posted it in the pharmacy, cuz it's really useful in advising patients.
Re: when to visit Dr. before wedding?
I used ortho tricyclen lo and it was really good. I had no side effects at all- no bleeding/spotting/nausea etc.
Re: when to visit Dr. before wedding?
^ Ortho tricyclen lo was recalled last year. They started their distribution again this year. I hope you knew that and are in good health.
Be safe.
Re: when to visit Dr. before wedding?
^really? i took it a couple years back... why was it recalled?
Re: when to visit Dr. before wedding?
It was on TV. People were suffering massive side effects and its effectiveness was also thus questioned. The company was sued and if I remember correctly, a fatality also occurred. They are, however, distributing again, I just wanted to make sure you knew these facts and were safe. Perhaps consult your doctor again?
Re: when to visit Dr. before wedding?
^i had no idea... i stopped taking it two/three years ago... while I was taking it, I did not suffer any side effects but it is scary to think that i was on the pill that had such dangerous side effects...
Re: when to visit Dr. before wedding?
Well you stopped it time I suppose. The recalled it only recently -- last year.
Are you on one now?
Re: when to visit Dr. before wedding?
dont u girls think that contraceptives are harmfull for health?
Re: when to visit Dr. before wedding?
I still need to do this...
Re: when to visit Dr. before wedding?
there are other methods as well..........
Re: when to visit Dr. before wedding?
^ contraceptives are medication and any medication will have side-effects.
if by other methods, you mean pulling out or timing it to your natural cycle, both of those require a lot of discipline and self-control and aren't nearly as effective or safe as the pill.
