Pope John Paul is in a hospital now, suffering from some kind of respiratory infection.
A couple of questions:
Is the pope chosen for life; or can he retire due to old-age? The current pope seems quite old. I wonder if he has to conitnue till he dies, or can he just say “I have had enough, and I need to rest now”.
When the pope dies, how is the new pope selected/elected? Who are the front-runners right now?
Faisal Bhaijan, Catholicism is the most hierarchical religion. Cardinals (with red robes) are picked by Pope, and in turn they select the next Pope.. that kinda makes sense.
A while ago I read that there is a black guy also who is kinda front-runner for the position. I guess once the vacancy opens up, we will hear more about it.
Word on the street is that the conservative cardinals have the edge right now, so the next pope is likely to be as conservative or even so so then Johnny Paul II is.
