[Taken from Quranic verses from 71 to 85 of Surah Saad (3]
Allah says: (Remember) when your Lord (Allah) said to the angels: “Truly, I am going to create man from clay”.So when I have fashioned him and breathed into him (his) soul created by Me, then you fall down prostrate to him."So the angels prostrated themselves, all of them:Except Iblis (Satan) he was proud and was one of the disbelievers.
(Allah) said: “O Iblis (Satan)! What prevents you from prostrating yourself to one whom I have created with Both My Hands. Are you too proud (to fall prostrate to Adam) or are you one of the high exalted?”[Iblis (Satan)] said: “I am better than he, You created me from fire, and You created him from clay.”(Allah) said: "Then get out from here, for verily, you are outcast.“And verily!, My Curse is on you till the Day of Recompense.”
[Iblis (Satan)] said: “My Lord! Give me then respite till the Day the (dead) are resurrected.”(Allah) said: "Verily! You are of those allowed respite “Till the Day of the time appointed.”[Iblis (Satan)] said: "By Your Might, then I will surely mislead them all,“Except Your chosen slaves amongst them (faithful, obedient, true believers of Islamic Monotheism).” (Allah) said: “The Truth is, and the Truth I say,That I will fill Hell with you [Iblis (Satan)] and those of them (mankind) that follow you, together.”

Satan is not afraid of anyone except Allah. He runs away from God's Book-Al Qur'an, when it is recited and when the Azan is said (Call to Prayer usually announced from a mosque). God has given him such a power which no other person or a jinn has. He is also the father of all jinn as Adam is to all men. So, we must have to seek and get the Protection of Our Creator Allah alone.
Satan was, initially a pious jinn , who attained a high position due to his devotion to Allah. Allah gave him such a high status and the opportunity of being in the company of Angels of Heaven. So he learnt a lot of good things being in the company of the Angels of Allah. But you will learn in this page, how he corrupted himself due to his jealousy and arrogance which cause him to rebelled against Allah which brought upon him the wrath and curse of Allah and hence his downfall for ever. Now, he has no chance for redemption of his sin because Allah has cursed him and Allah does not change His Words. He will take them who rebel against Allah to Hell Fire by misleading them with regard to the Commands and Religion of Allah (Al-Islam). His followers are among the jinn and mankind, they are those who leave Allah's Guidance and Protection and take Satan as thier wali (protector) . He is for mankind, like a wolf is for the herd of sheep. Satan's aim is to leave you and all of manking astray.

Cos Allah needed someone to blame for bad things that Humans do. In oder to fathem the goodnes of Allah there has to someone BAD to compare Allah with. I think Satan is leading the poll now.
