Asking for bank statement is a bit much IMHO.

Here is what I dont think is wrong to ask:

Degree/transcripts
Naturalization/citizenship/residency papers
Proof of employment of some sort

Doing a background check is perfectly legitimate also.

I completely agree with the above.

In addition, if the girl’s family is askiing for proof of education/employment/immigration status…then the girl’s family should be willing to show the same documents to the guy’s side.
