when one does not have to fast and what should they do instead?

what are the conditions in which someone should not fast.

I have heard of travel, sickness and that either u make it up, or you feed some hungry person(s)

what about chronic conditions, obviously you can not make up a roza becuase the condition is there unless by miracle it goes away.

what are other conditions under which one is permitted to not fast? and what can they do otherwise?

Qalal La ho Tabaarak wata’ala Fil Quran al Kareem kama waradah fis Surah Al Baqarah (2)

ﻢﻴﺟﺮﻟﺍ ﻦﻄﻴﺸﻟﺍ ﻦﻣ ﻪﻠﻟﺍ ﺎﺑ ﺫ ﻮﻋ ﺍ
:bism:
183. O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you, even as it was prescribed for those before you, that ye may ward off (evil);

184. (Fast) a certain number of days; and (for) him who is sick among you, or on a journey, (the same) number of other days; and for those who can afford it there is a ransom: the feeding of a man in need - but whoso doeth good of his own accord, it is better for him: and that ye fast is better for you if ye did but know -

185. The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for mankind, and clear proofs of the guidance, and the Criterion (of right and wrong). And whosoever of you is present, let him fast the month, and whosoever of you is sick or on a journey, (let him fast the same) number of other days. Allah desireth for you ease; He desireth not hardship for you; and (He desireth) that ye should complete the period, and that ye should magnify Allah for having guided you, and that peradventure ye may be thankful.

186. And when My servants question thee concerning Me, then surely I am nigh. I answer the prayer of the suppliant when he crieth unto Me. So let them hear My call and let them trust in Me, in order that they may be led aright.

187. It is made lawful for you to go in unto your wives on the night of the fast. They are raiment for you and ye are raiment for them. Allah is Aware that ye were deceiving yourselves in this respect and He hath turned in mercy toward you and relieved you. So hold intercourse with them and seek that which Allah hath ordained for you, and eat and drink until the white thread becometh distinct to you from the black thread of the dawn. Then strictly observe the fast till nightfall and touch them not, but be at your devotions in the mosques. These are the limits imposed by Allah, so approach them not. Thus Allah expoundeth His revelation to mankind that they may ward off (evil).

A man once asked the Prophet Muhammad :saw::

“Can I fast when traveling?”

The Prophet:saw: replied:

“You can fast if you want, and if you want you can break the fast.”

Al-Muwatta, Volume 18, Hadith 24

Anas ibn Malik:ra: said: “We once traveled with the (Prophet Muhammad:saw: ) in Ramadan, and those who were fasting did not find fault with those who were not, and those who were not fasting did not find fault with those who were.”

As far as I know, not fasting without valid reason has the kaffaraa of fasting for 60 days for each saum missed or feeding 60 needy people .. please correct me if I am wrong since i dun remember the exact rule!

anwaar

for breaking a fast before iftaar without necessity means 60 fats sor feeding of 60 ppl, but ayah 184 as u posted notes that you can feed a person..

I am taking that as if you dont fast and feed someone that day instead you are okay, but if you do fast and then dont wait until iftaar uhave to feed 60 ppl. Is that a correct read?

correct but one thing the ayah 184 is for those who have "sharaie uz'r" for not to fast...

ahh okay, now what are sharaee uz'r.
i understand if you are nursing, pregnant etc..u cant. or sick..but what all does it cover.

i.e. if you are ill and your body cant handle i, that is understood.

what about chronic conditions, and what are the limits of these chronic conditions..

let me give u an example..if you diabetic..or .. you are on some medication..and lets say u have to take it a few times a day. i dunno could be allergy meds, anti-depression, cholesterol lowering, etc etc. there are other examples i suppose

would these conditions allow a person to not fast because that person needs to take the medicine? sometimes for a chronic illness, sometimes for a chronic condition which can have health impacts if not treated, or just chronic conditions one lives with.

Fraudz, I think 2:184 is two part.. one describes those who can't do it for some reason within the month.. for them the allowance is to make up for lost time.. In my opinion.. the second part caters to the 'chronic conditions' you mentioned.. and it's outlined by the *"and that ye fast is better for you if ye did but know * .. part.. I mean if there were no ifs and buts.. why would Allah include such a lenient statement..
