When Madhuri`s son didn`t recognize her

Indian movie star enjoying U.S. anonymity

MUMBAI, India - Only a really great role would tempt Bollywood superstar Madhuri Dixit away from motherhood and back to acting, the actress said in an interview published Friday.
Dixit was Bollywood’s leading lady in the 1990s, but she slowly gave up acting after her marriage in 1999 to an Indian surgeon based in Denver, Colo., and the birth of her two sons.

“Unless I get a role that I am interested in, I will not act,” she told the Mumbai Mirror newspaper. The entertainment capital of Bombay, India, is also known as Mumbai.

Dixit is on a monthlong vacation in India visiting her parents. She drew cheers from fans and Bollywood colleagues last week at a film awards function in Bombay where she performed a dance sequence to hit songs from her old movies.
But Dixit says although she misses acting, she will make a comeback only if it’s a “substantial” film that is shot in the United States. Bollywood movies are increasingly being shot in locations abroad, particularly the United States, Canada, Britain and Australia.
She said motherhood was the best thing that had happened to her and she enjoyed changing diapers and pushing a stroller around in the streets without attracting any attention.

“I think I am enjoying myself more in the U.S. because people don’t recognize me and I am not mobbed,” Dixit said.
Her last hit movie was “Devdas” in 2002 where she played a courtesan in a saga of doomed love that also featured top actors Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai.

Madhuri is back in Mumbai. This lady, who was ruling Bollywood at one point of time, got married to Shreeram Nene and shifted her base to the US. There she is spending a happily married life with her hubby and two sons, away from the glam sham.

Last week, Madhuri flew back to India with her children for performing at the Filmfare awards. It was definitely exciting news for all the “Madhuri Dixit” fans as they were to get a chance to see their goddess perform live on stage. The show went well and her performance was brilliant of course (well, you can’t expect anything less than best from Madhuri). She got appreciation from everyone for such a brilliant come back on stage but little did she knew that things were going to take a reverse turn soon.

After her performance Madhuri hurried back home to be with her sons. They didn’t make it to the show as ‘Mummy Nene’ feels they are too young to go for a late night event like this. They stayed back home with her parents instead. Now, Madhuri had her make up and costume on, when she reached home. As soon as she entered her house, to her horror she found that her younger son didn’t recognize her at all. He didn’t even go close to her considering her as some stranger. This was due to the heavy make up she had donned on her face. If that wasn’t enough, her elder son found her made up look so funny that he started laughing. Says ‘Mrs. Nene’ that her kids aren’t really used to seeing her in such an avatar. In fact, it was the first time that they ever saw her wearing such a heavy make up.

Little do the kids know that their mama dearest is not just a homemaker but also a powerhouse of talent who ruled the Hindi film industry for more than a decade with her astonishing acting and graceful dancing skills and that she didn’t always speak English with an American accent.

Re: When Madhuris son didnt recognize her

There so much hype around her.

*Madhuri Dixit plans return to acting; reading scripts *

GG2.NET NEWS [03/03/2006]

MADHURI Dixit is all set to make a return to the silver screen after her marriage to a US-based doctor – and two lovely sons – but says she will sign only those films that can be shot in the US where she is now based.

According to media reports, Madhuri has made it clear that she will not work full time because her children are very small and need her.

Despite these embargoes, there are many filmmakers in India who are willing to sign on the talented and beautiful actress. The star of such films as Tezaab, Dil, Saajan, Devdas and Dil to Paagal Hai, enjoys a good rapport with most of the top actors and finding a good script to work on should not be much trouble for her.

Among those filmmakers who still want to cast the actress, is Yash Chopra who is rumoured to have offered her a role in his upcoming movie. Way back in 1997, they had teamed up for the super hit film Dil To Paagal Hai.

Madhuri moved to the US after marrying Sriram Nene, a doctor by profession.

Last month, after a long gap, she made an appearance at the 51st Filmfare Awards function in Mumbai, where she gave a superb dance performance, though she was suffering from fever just minutes prior to the show.

Madhuri is holidaying in Mumbai these days with her two sons -- three-year-old Arin and one-year-old Ryan – apart from reading scripts and meeting directors.

Re: When Madhuris son didnt recognize her

My kids laughed at Me…
…when they saw me with war paint on, says Madhuri Dixit, in conversation with Ram Kamal Mukherjee

The charisma, charm and that million-dollar smile is intact, only now she speaks with an American twang and sports some extra weight. Seven years after her marriage to Dr. Shriram Nene and settling down in the US, Madhuri Dixit’s fan following has not reduced. Some things never change, and that is her commitment to the task at hand. When she was acting in films, her roles were on the top of her agenda. Now, as a wife, and mother of Arin and Ryan, Madhuri’s priorities have changed.

DANCING AT THE FILMFARE AWARDS

“I could hear fans whistle and cheer while on stage for my performance at the Filmfare Awards. It made me feel so special,” says Madhuri, keeping an eye on her children who are busy playing with their toy cars. Was she nervous going on stage after so many years? “Yes, there was some sort of nervousness but Sarojji (Khan) is my morale booster,” she says.

MAMA MIA

Madhuri is mother to three-year-old Arin and a year-old Ryan. This is the first time that Ryan is visiting India, Arin was here when he was eight months old. Currently, she is revelling in motherhood and domesticity. “Motherhood is the best thing that has happened to me,” she says. “I enjoy every bit of it – even changing nappies and pushing the pram around in crowded Times Square. I think I am enjoying myself more in the US because people don’t recognise me and I am not mobbed.” On March 17, Ryan turns a year old and she is expecting her husband to join in the birthday celebrations. “We might have a small family get together then,” she says. However, Madhuri is particular about her kids being photographed. “They are too young, I want to keep them away from all the glam sham,” she says.

Madhuri is visiting India after three years. “It was snowing in Denver when I boarded the flight to India. But it’s so humid here… my kids were jet-lagged and they couldn’t cope with the climate, so I was really worried. But now they are enjoying their vacation,” says Madhuri. Do the children squabble with each other? “There is not too much age difference between the two. I think in two years they will be the best of buddies,” she explains. Incidentally, Madhuri left immediately after her Filmfare performance to be with her kids. “I never leave my children alone. So I didn’t hang around afterwards,” she says. “I was missing them. However, the moment I entered home, Arin looked at me and started laughing. I realised I had forgotten to take off my make-up. He hadn’t seen me like this before. Ryan couldn’t recognise me with the lehenga choli and stared blankly at me.” Who are the children more attached to? “It depends. The elder one was crying for his father the other day. Ryan is too young to miss his father. They are both fond of Ram,” she says.

**HEAVY WEIGHT **

The actress, known for her svelte figure, has put on some weight. “It happens when the focus shifts from you to your kids,” she laughs. “I am absolutely fit and fine. I am a dancer so I will never put on weight. Once both my kids grow up and join school, I will be able to give time to myself again.” But doesn’t she miss the adulation and fan-following she enjoyed when at the top? “Motherhood is a full-time job. When I was an actress I gave a hundred per cent to my profession. Now that I am married, I want to give a hundred per cent to my husband and my kids,” she explains.

**AT THE MOVIES **

Even after staying away from the limelight, film-makers have continued to woo her with offers. “You will be shocked to know that in last three years I have seen only one film, and that is Parineeta. I think Vidya Balan is a fantastic actress,” says Madhuri. "I have seen certain portions of Bunty Aur Babli and I liked the comedy. In the US even though I get invites for the Indian film premieres I can’t attend because my kids are too young to sit in a theatre for three hours.”

In her three months here Madhuri plans to catch up with the films she has missed watching. “I plan to watch Black and Rang De Basanti. I haven’t seen Rituparno’s Chokher Bali, Aparna Sen’s Mr And Mrs Iyer, Madhur’s Page 3 and Nagesh’s Iqbal either,” she says. “I would love to watch these films.”

A few years ago Somnath Sen (of Leela fame) wanted to make a film with Madhuri and Amitabh Bachchan, but the film was shelved after Madhuri backed out of the project. “I didn’t back out of the project. I got pregnant and I decided not to strain myself. Later, I heard that Somnath shelved the film. It’s unfortunate that he didn’t make the film. I always wanted to work with Mr Bachchan and would love to work with him if I get another chance. In fact, Baghbaan was offered to me, but I couldn’t do the film because of my kids,” she says.

It was also reported that Yash Chopra had approached her for his next? “Not just Yashji, many other directors have approached me. Even Rituparno Ghosh wants to narrate a story for which he is coming from Kolkata to meet me. I have been approached by eight renowned directors, but I will do only one or two films. That too, the films will have to be completed in one schedule and preferably in the US,” she clears the air.

SABBATICAL OR VOLUNTARY RETIREMENT?

“I’m on a long sabbatical. Unless I get a role that I am interested in, I will not act,” she says. “Frankly, I don’t miss Bollywood, I miss acting, but that is because I am an actor. I guess I have done everything an actress can dream of in a lifetime, now I will only do substantial films.”

OUT OF SIGHT, OUT OF MIND

Does anyone from the industry keep in touch with her? “I’m not really out of touch. Otherwise you would not have been interviewing me. It proves that people are still interested in me. I will not do films just to stay in the mind of my fans,” she justifies.

LOOKING AHEAD

It was reported that she might start her dance academy in the US. “My sister is already training students there. I might start my own dance academy in the near future. I want to do so much in life; there is a lot to do. At the moment I am busy with my kids, but I will not disappoint my fans. I will come back soon,” she says.

  • Not just Yashji, eight other directors have approached me to act in their films

**Madhuri: I want to do good films
**By: Upala KBR
March 2, 2006

Madhuri Dixit is glowing. She’s in Mumbai after a long break, with her two baby boys, three-year old Arin and year-old Ryan.

Hubby Dr Shriram Nene, will soon be joining them and the family picture will be complete. A chat with the beautiful actress on her plans here:

Is it true that you are doing a Yash Raj film?
Yes but everything is at the discussions stage. It’s too early to talk about it. Only once everything is finalised, will I be able to talk about it.

You want to do films full- time now?
I can’t be doing plenty of films as my babies are still very small. But yes, I would definitely like to do at least a couple of good films with good makers.

Will you be staying back in India to shoot?
No, that’s not possible. A lot of films are shot abroad so I am looking at films that could be shot in the USA or something that could be shot in one schedule. Nowadays, there are lots of films that are shot there. I am here for two months out of which 15 days have already gone.
**
What kind of roles are you looking at?**I want to do something challenging roles. It will mean time away from my babies so it has to excite me enough. Also the maker should feel inspired to work with me to do a subject they feel suits me. They should also want to work with me. I haven’t watched a single Hindi film in the last two years as its time consuming to look after two small children. Now my kids have settled down I have decided to take up acting again, and have fun!

Your performance at the Filmfare was awesome.
The reaction has been amazing! When I was asked to perform, I was very apprehensive. By the time I went on stage I was having palpitations. Then they announced my name and I went on… and I kept hearing the ‘oohs!’ and ‘aahs!’ of the audience. I finally settled in. When I met up with everybody it was just like meeting up with my family once again. I have grown up with these people…. The last time I danced it was for Dola re but you know what? Dancing is like swimming or cycling and you can never forget it. Of course, Sarojji (Khan) was there and helped me a lot.

You performed despite having flu.
At the awards night when I was feeling unwell, Ash (Aishwarya Rai) did something so sweet. I was touched. She sent some ginger tea over for me as she knows I like it and it’s good for my cold.

Did your children accompany you?
No, they stayed back home with my parents and best friend. They are too young to go for an event like this. You know, the strangest thing happened…. My younger son didn’t recognise me with my make-up on when I reached home. They haven’t seen me with this much make-up on in USA, so it was a first. The older one was laughing when he saw me with heavy make-up and ghaghra and Ryan just looked blankly at me. He didn’t come to me as he couldn’t understand who I was.

How are your babies liking Mumbai?
Now, they are loving it. Initially they were not used to the pollution and dust and they both got sick and suffered from colds and coughs. But now that they have recovered they have settled in — so many people walking in and out of home — they love that.

They must be missing their dad a lot.
Yes, they are both missing Ram very much, especially Arin. He’s so used to my husband that when he’s upset he keeps asking, ‘Where’s daddy? I want him’. Ram is also missing us a lot. He told me he’s missing us so much that he’s plastered the entire home with our photographs so that he sees us everywhere. Ram will be joining us in Mumbai shortly.

Till then?
I am missing him too. I am so used to depending on Ram for everything, all my decisions that I don’t know what to do…here of course I am dependent on my parents for everything. They are so much more responsible than me that’s it’s natural for me to leave everything to them.

Re: When Madhuris son didnt recognize her

^ great interview! she's so sweet and she cares about her family :) so cute when she talked about her babies looking strangely at here when she had make-up on.

awwww her kids r so cute! :)

Re: When Madhuris son didnt recognize her

The little one looks like their father.

Re: When Madhuris son didnt recognize her

Anonymity, my foot. :cb: She has been forgotten and this sounds like a threadbare publicity strategy to find something to do in films after being out of the limelight for some years. There is loads of new talent in the industry and she deserves to remain retired.

Re: When Madhuris son didnt recognize her

What a waste.
