When lying is allowed ?

In a Hadith, our Holy Prophet PBUH said, “*Be honest because honesty leads to goodness, and goodness leads to Paradise. Beware of falsehood because it leads to immorality, and immorality leads to Hell.” *

So yesterday we had a meetin in mosque and had a long discussion on ‘lying’ and also what quran and hadith says about it. I came to a conclusion, that we are not suppose to lie in any condition.

Do you think its okay to lie sometimes in extreme situations or we are not suppose to lie at all.

What if you are in a situation where you can save someone’s life by lying, are you going to lie according to Quran & Hadith?

Re: When lying is allowed ?

Yes ... every injunction has an exception

If somebody really ugly asks you how attractive they are ... let's say someone has an unattractive wife does he tell her the truth?

In some cases to lie is necessary if it can be done bending the truth is better than an outright lie.

Such as in the case of Ibrahim (AS) who called Sarah (AS) his sister, but in fact she was his sister in faith.

Re: When lying is allowed ?

It is a very delicate topic to study. I will give you one example from the Quran and one from Sahi Bukhari:

[16:106] ‘’Any one who, after accepting faith in God, utters Unbelief,- except under compulsion, his heart remaining firm in Faith - but such as open their breast to Unbelief, on them is Wrath from God, and theirs will be a dreadful Penalty.’’

Sahi Bukhari
Volume 3, Book 49, Number 857

Narrated Um Kulthum bint Uqba:

That she heard Allah’s Apostle saying, “He who makes peace between the people by inventing good information or saying good things, is not a liar

Re: When lying is allowed ?

^ yes, u r definitely allowed to lie in such a situation....

Re: When lying is allowed ?

i think shia has a concept of taqayyah ............... to hide ur beliefs .

Only certain Shia sects practice Taqiyya.

But yeah, If such a practice was allowed. Why didn't the early Muslims just lie about their beliefs. They sure wouldn't have been persecuted then. Maybe they didn't do that because it's against our beliefs?

Re: When lying is allowed ?

life is a sacred and u have to save it at any cost and thats why committing suicide is Haram and thats why you are allowed to lie in the event ur life is on the line [in reality and not perceived]. again, it all depends on taqwa as well, some don't even lie in those trying times and there are examples of that like Mansour who said anal-Haq even when he was given poison to drink. and this is the ONLY scenario where shara'an its permissable to lie

Re: When lying is allowed ?

Suppose evil people enter in to house, ask for your family members who are hiding in basement.

Would you tell the truth?

My take on it is that, if you know or suspect someone will use your truth against you and your family safety or anything you consider dear to you (this is a big qualifier I added here) then nothing wrong in lying.
