I like to know when / if there is a best time to quit job and move on to a new challenge ? Is quitting at the top of your game or when you feel like you are at peak is good idea, that is leaving behind a legacy or leaving at a time when no one expected ? or perhaps question would be should one leave when at top of their game for new higher grounds.

I think it varies on a person's needs, I guess.
Professionally speaking, perhaps when you have exhausted all options for growth for the current position. It's good to have a new challenge to conquer. =) Are you thinking of leaving your current position?

If finances is priority in your life , moving on is good enough on the basis that you are getting a better salary else where.
If career progression is a priority in your life , then moving else where will be justified only if the new job offers that growth you are seeking.
If your current job is well in line with your finances, personal and career growth and other factors like distance to work , work life balance etc dont come in the way then dont move jobs. there is no such thing as leaving a legacy. Job markets move very quickly , employees get remembered for a little while . But in the longer term once you are gone from the scene , you are gone , unless you are joining their direct competitors in a bigger , better role :)

When is the right time? Everyone may have their own opinion on this but I can tell you when is the *wrong *time...
When you *think *you need to quit your job and move on.
And why new challenge? kya tangi hai? kion panga lete ho? aj kal desiyon ko ye bari musibat hai new challenge or new adventure, tik ke lagay raho araam se

Never leave a job when you are at the top of the game. that would be foolish. leave when there are promotion problems.

Top of game is when you get offers the most lucrative. When promotion issues come , it means, as per the employer that you arent yet ready to take the next step on the ladder and this can prove to be your "sensitive point" for the potential future employers ! So the most lucrative time to squeeze the maximum out of potential job offer is when you are at your maximum best in a certain role

Thanks all! Good responses. I agree with CB's definition of top of the game. Actually, I generally get bored at 3 year mark. Same is the case with my current role. In 3 years, its been lot of fun, lot of learning, couple of promotions but seems like marginal learning is no longer here, I am at plateau, I have a nice team which is learning from me more than I can get out of people above me hence getting Obsolete fear. However, In reality, its about being ready to do something different at 3 year mark. From my experience of job hopping over last decade or so ever couple of years, one thing is clear, in corporate world we are under paid and only way to get good raise is to move on to new place but that comes with sweat equity of moving, leaving stable life, changing homes, Nagging Mrs. Chaudhry and what not.
