When is the "right" time to ask for a Raise ?

**So this is the case scenario:

**The Organization I joined usually operates like this :

They initially hire you on a 3 month contract. If happy with your performance you are then offered a 6 month contract and then if things still look good you are offered yearly contracts…That’s their Company Policy !

Now from what I had heard they offer you “incentives” 2-3 years into your job ( in the form of all expenses paid trips abroad etc ). So I’m into my third month with them and will be completing it end of July…after which technically I should be offered a 6 month contract. However they have offered me an “incentive” already and asked me for an “year long” commitment…which I declined as an year long commitment I may not be able to honour…so even though I would have loved to have availed the opportunity , I decided against it and thought that’s the end of it.

Now 3 weeks later they have approached me again with the same offer and asked me if I would consider at least a 6 month commitment in the least with them…
**
Pros :

I love working with them.

I have a excellent position within the hospital “hierarchy”

It offers me the sort of experience that I was looking for.

I have “fixed” hours which is rare in my profession.

Cons :

Even though I’m paid relatively well , I’ve been told private practitioners make twice as much.

I don’t like being tied down to a job…I like having the liberty to leave whenever I want to…

If I make a commitment , I’ll have to stick by it…I don’t like making false promises.

If I make a 6 month long commitment just for the “incentive” , then I will not be in a position to ask for revision of terms of contract at the end of the Month.

So long story short…would it be too early to ask for a raise now ?

Considering they are really interested in offering me an year long contract even before my 3 months are up , what are the chances that they would agree to a raise ?

Or shall I just agree to a 6 month contract with my current salary and take the trip to Paris ?**

Re: When is the "right" time to ask for a Raise ?

whenever u have another job in hand.

**
I know why YOU want me to get another job…its not happening

But seriously though…that is a good idea , I’ll look at a few in the next week…but my dilemma is they just told me about this revised offer yesterday and have asked for an answer by tomorrow …So I don’t have much time to use the "I’ve got a better offer angle " :(**

Re: When is the "right" time to ask for a Raise ?

Based on the circumstances , go for it . Six month is a short period , it will be over in a few months.

Re: When is the "right" time to ask for a Raise ?

Listen to Mirch. 6 months is nothing, time's flying by.

Re: When is the "right" time to ask for a Raise ?

So ask for the Raise After the 6 months/Trip then , don't broach that subject till then ?

Re: When is the "right" time to ask for a Raise ?

I dont think i got it wrong after quickly going through your lengthy post but here is what i think.

if you cant committ yourself every for six months, you dont deserve any increment or incentives. Just keep doing what you are doing and leave when you find a better opportunity.

Re: When is the "right" time to ask for a Raise ?

It's your prerogative to negotiate the terms of your contract including engagement duration and pay. You can certainly do so at the end of your current term.

btw this thread belongs in C&A :)

Re: When is the "right" time to ask for a Raise ?

6 month will fly by in no tiime..in just 6 months. Go to Paris and ask for a raise!!

Re: When is the "right" time to ask for a Raise ?

enjoy paris 6 months will fly by,check out other options while doing the 6 month contract so you will be ready with other options if you're offered another extension then ask for a raise etc...
