When is the right time to apply ..

for a new job? Like if someone is in the last stage of a training, its about to end soon.
Should one wait till the certificate is in his/her hand or can the person apply for an job before that?

Re: When is the right time to apply ..

u can and should apply before that.
in US a large number of MBA grads of major unis have job offers in their hands before they graduate. many have already accepted job offers before they finish.

Re: When is the right time to apply ..

thanks X2, I have another question. The requirments ask for some degree that you dont have, but u have the training and experience, should one also go ahead and apply for it?
Its complicated as the post is in the mother concern and you dont want to destroy your image by looking like an idiot.

Secondly most probaly the post is a full time job (38.5 h/week) and u can mostly do 30-35 h/week, should you point this in your resume or wait till u might get invited for an interview,

Re: When is the right time to apply ..

as far as expereince but not degree goes there is no harm in applying, if they dont think u qualify, u dont get invited for interview, no harm done.

the hours issue is a little tricky, i am not sure on that one, ny gut says be open upfront

Re: When is the right time to apply ..

I agree with X2 about degree. I know some very successful people in high tech who have not gone beyond high school. Your training and your experience are worth a lot as long as you highlight them properly in your resume.

As for hours, there is not lot of difference between 35 and 38; I would not point is out in the resume. What you might be able to do is ask for some flextime when you do get that far. Depending on nature of work and organization it might be possible that they will allow you to work from home.

Re: When is the right time to apply ..

Thanks Guys, very interesting answers!

I am in douth, should I apply now or wait till after Christmas, even if it means that the post can be occupied. As about the degree, I am sure they would consider the training and experience more, but some companies want u to have the titel! As for that I am doing parttime degree, so Insahallah will achieve that part too, I have added in my resume, that I am doing xxx degree and will end 20xx. (Hope this is ok so?)
About working from home, Boston made a good point, maybe I can negoicate this, if they really want a full time post. I was reading in their website that they offer flexitime and telework from home.

Re: When is the right time to apply ..

no no dont wait until after christmas, send it in now, I mean its nto like ua re the only candidate and they are waiting for your resume.

people think that december is a slow time and dont apply, in many cases ppl want the new person to start ASAP in the new year.

if u are afraid of being lost in holiday shuffle, dont worry, send a resume now, and in yur cover letter note that you will follow up with them, follow up to bring yourself back in their mind later.

The fact is that for many companies the plans for 2008 have been laid out, headcount reduction, re-assigment, increase decisions have been made and they have to start executing. so they want ppl to start asap in 2008, which means if you have an offer in dec, and u can start in jan, they are in a good position resource wise. In my current company, i wanted to start Jan, but they wanted me to come in and go through orientation, meet ppl I would be workign with and review my projects, even it it meant that I came in mid dec, was at work for 2 weeks and then had 2 paid weeks off..which did not impact my annual vacation time, because simply for them getting someone in and having a running start come january was more important than paying a few weeks salary because I had vacation plans that I could nto change

Re: When is the right time to apply ..

remember ..... you snooze you loose ... just follow X2's advice

Re: When is the right time to apply ..

Thank you both Boston and X2 for the valueable advice. I am not worried about the job getting occupied as these kinds of opporunities come very often, the company/bank has 90 open vacancies right, so u can guess that these kinds of opening come and go.
What I am not sure, if I am ready to leave my company. As I am more into IT, the other company that is related to mines, is more in Banking less IT, where as we too are in Banking, but 80% we provide the IT services to them, so keeping my interest and background in mind, I am thinking that it will be a con to leave this job/company.
This thought has just crossed me now!
Ok the job is Process Consultant! I am bit confused, but I think due to personal reasons, I will not apply just now, its not the right time. So thanks again.

Re: When is the right time to apply ..

ps. but thanks to this, I have updated my CV and typed a head letter. Might come handy some other time.

Saadia

keep in mind that for many ppl the career growth path is to move out from tech and become a func-tech .. i.e. functional role with I/T component, business analysts for example and then move up.

There is a dire need of ppl with such skillset, as companies outsource i/T work to bodyshops, strategic thinking and solution oriented mindest is becoming more critical but there is a shortage of such people.
