is it improper to have non-vegetarian food in front of them?
Is it considered bad manners?

Re: When having a meal with a vegetarian…
why would it be bad manners?? ![]()
if you respect their food choices…they should be ready to do the same…
what would u do? get up from the table and go somewhere else??
if they have the problem…they should be the one to go away IMO..
Re: When having a meal with a vegetarian...
well look at it this way....if you were dining with a nonMuslim would you be offended if they ate pork or drank alcohol in front of you?
Re: When having a meal with a vegetarian...
Very good point ^
I dont really get offended if someone is eating pork in front of me or drinking alcohol. My crowd does not really consist of people who get belligerent or drunk so I dont really notice it.
Re: When having a meal with a vegetarian...
not at all, jst make sumthing vegetarian for them and dont try to force feed them your mean beef korma its really rude when ppl insist u eat sumthing non-veg
Re: When having a meal with a vegetarian...
If it is big party which you are throwing and there will be other guests then they should know there will be all kinds of foods on the table. When you invite only them then it is good gesture to serve only vegetarian food.
Re: When having a meal with a vegetarian...
As long as there is atleast one veg main.. I don't think what you order/prepare is an issue.
Re: When having a meal with a vegetarian...
If you are inviting a vegetarian family at your home and they are the only family that you invited, its just common courtesy not to cook any non-veg.
When we do potlucks and if we have a vegetarian family (or more coming), we display veg and non-veg separately and let them know.
If I am at a restaurant, I dont mind ordering non-veg (halal off course) in the presence of a veg family.
Re: When having a meal with a vegetarian…
as TLK said (he always copy me and sometimes he even posts the copy before original
)
If thats the only family invited, it better not to have non-veg although people dont mind it.

actually people might mind. its like telling them that what we are serving you is not good enough for us to eat so we cooked a diff dish for ourselves.

^itnay nakhrailay guests?? guests na ho gaye samdi ho gaye ![]()

someone fresh from back home might, but if the family is living here for a while, I m sure they get accustomed to it. Its not the matter of good or bad, its the matter of personal preference. I have not seen people getting offended with this.
Re: When having a meal with a vegetarian…
see the way I see it, if I am a guest and an American family invited me and they cooked Salmon for me but have roast pork and wine along with it for themselves, I may feel little odd. I wont mind but I may feel that I was a burden on them as they had to cook special meal for me that is so outside their normal food that they had to cook something different for themselves. You dont feel easy if you sense that you were a burden on the host.
Re: When having a meal with a vegetarian...
See the problem is
Some people I work with are vegetarians...religiously they dont eat meat at all.
When we eat lunch, a lot of times I have food from home and it will be non-vegetarian food.
So we're eating and I feel so uneasy because I dont know if I am offending them.
But when someone eats pork or drinks alcohol in front of me - I dont notice or think about it. It doesnt offend me at all as long as their choices are not affecting me.
Re: When having a meal with a vegetarian...
^ In that case reha, I wouldn't worry about offending. it's at work....ur not inviting them to your house
and I agree with what most ppl said here....if its a party, having a variety of dishes and if it's just one vegetarian couple/family, having only vegetarian stuff seems like the reasonable thing.

yeah but in the case that D6 was talking about....what if it's a guest that's staying for a couple of days/weeks? will you get rid of all of your meat/meat-based products just for them? then in that case, it seems ok to eat ur own food and serve them something else.
(now how many people who are strict vegetarians will stay with a non-vegetarian family...is another discussion)

I've never had any problem with people eating meat/chicken/fish infront of me.. everyone should order/eat what they like. Most of the people I know.. make regular food for themselves and they just mention to me politely "you won't touch any of that so here's ______ for you..".
Re: When having a meal with a vegetarian...
I think strict vegetarians are quite sensitive if someone is eating meat in front of them. Some feel offended so i would be careful but if it looks like they are fine with it and dont look horrified then I'd go ahead. I know it's not much of a issue for us Muslims but think of it as how non-Muslims find it difficult to understand that we have to be very respectful when speaking about our Prophet(pbuh)!
Re: When having a meal with a vegetarian…

:smack: :hehe:
OT: I dont think that is improper or bad manners. They eat their food and you eat yours.
