well u r an indian, u belong to same culture too, whether or not u practice it thats a different issue. cultures cannot be idiotic because it is what it is due to centuries of social evolution and its because of that its different and no one can do anything about it. what u precieve to be “idiotic” or “oppressive”, is infact a norm in that culture and people are following it because they think it is the right thing to do. just like wearing low necks and swim suites are norm in “western culture” but is precieved as idiotic by others.
hayaa and modesty is related to our culture but how it is represented is different for each woman there. i have female cousins who wear burqa and are full time doctors or professors or pharmacist and persuing succesful careers and on other hand there are those who dont wear hijab but dress modestly and fashionably and are house wives by choice. and they belong to the same culture as well and have the same belief as that guppan. i dont see how they can be labled as house pets. perhaps u should do more research about the culture before u generalize it as idiotic.
