If I can recall my self it seems like since ever I had been a reading lover not only books but anything that I can get my hands on. I guess the credit goes to my parents because both of them use to read a lot so other then couple of my siblings every one else is very much in reading for time pass. It’s actually very good that because of that habit not only we can speak but read and write perfect urdu despite living all our lives abroad.
I still remember my dad’s scolding when I was in grade 4th and he found me reading Manto’s afsanay (which obviously went over my head due to their maturity level content (any body remember Kaali Shalwar???)). At that time I use to wake up early like 4:00 A.M just to read in peace as we are masha Allah say 7 siblings. Once my family got so worried as they were unable to find me in the whole neighborhood and was ready to go to the police while I have been reading on the top of the roof of our three story house hiding under the water tank. That’s also not a fond memory to remember . Oh man this reading has caused me lot of trouble growing up.
Class 3. 'Shehzado Ahmer a'een Sandal Pari' was the first book that I read.
When it comes to my interest in literature, it got connection with this story of 'Saif ul Malook'. In class 2 or 3, our teacher used to read us this story in parts in last hour of the class. This developed interest and asked my baba to buy me that book. It was not available in market and the book shop owner told him that he got Alif-Leela, but abba refused to buy me that. After 2-3 years, I was able to get copy of Alif Leela and now I know why abba was reluctant to buy the book at that time.
I have also seen many books in my father's collection ranging from fiction to serious political works by G M Syed. My baba used to bring books from a deobandi Madarsa and shia Imam Bargah. Still on my study table I got three religious books on top. Tafseer e Quran by Molana Maududi, Sahi Bukhari and Nehj ul Balagha. My amma also had interest in reading. Besides going through Sindhi newspapers she kept on reading some classics Sindhi novels like 'Zeenat', 'Dil Aram' and 'Stories from Shah jo Risalo'.
we always been a *nawa-y-waqaat *family.
Then from same mamon I used to borrow non fiction books to read.
Politics/Marxism.
Before that I read lots lots of story books at home.
We used to have like 5 children story books delivered by news paper guy..
*taleem o tarbeeat
noni haal
jugnu
bachon a bagh * etc etc
Good old days...
In class 2 when I got 50 bedtime stories as a first prize,I still have it.We had a lot of story books as part of our syllabus like urdu version of Oliver twist by charles dickens by the name of Aali py kia guzri and Roald Dahl’s charlie and the chocolate factory. My ami used to bring us Naun-e-hal and taleemo tarbiyat and I have read almost hundreds of stories about amro ayar .I never slept without reading a book and my siblings and I would keep the lights on at night whilst we were reading books.I was always inclined towards fiction till I reached college where I developed interest in literature and history.I don’t know when and how the book worm in me died just like that
I think so since I have read both versions it was more like an adapted version of Oliver twist.I could be wrong!
I haven't read both books. But I think Oliver Twist was an orphan and a little I remember about dramatisation of 'Aali pe kiya guzri' is Aali was kidnapped and her mother kept on searching him.
Maybe around 5-6 years of age. My mom had bought books like Little Bunny Follow His Nose, Pokey the Little Puppy, Sesame street books, fairy tales for me and my siblings. I remember reading them over and over again. The small collection grew with additions of books we'd order through Scholastic from school. I still have most of them, we took them with us when we moved here. I'm the bookworm in the family; majority of the books in the home library are mine.
I thought I am the only one who have these qualities or read these story books.
I was very crazy and even read story books in wash room. Once my brother literally locked the door and take away key with him, I spent almost 2 hours there and finished whole book (that was summer day)

I could read fluently by the time I was four. My mother realized that at 6 months all I wanted to do was sit in front of her magazines so she started teaching me everything. I never wanted any toys and the one barbie I bought because it was so pretty stayed in the box. It is still in mint condition so maybe I should sell it off.
Must have been around the age of 3/4 when I was at nursery..
We were expected to do weekly book reviews and regular reading of longer books at about 8 years old.. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, that sort of thing..
