From what I read, the Berber revolt in 740 was because they belonged to Al-Khawarij and as such opposed the Khalifah.
They were backed by them for sure, since Ifriqiya became a khawarij breeding ground. But there were Muslims berbers too, since during the Ummayads cities such as Qaryawan were established for trade links.
I think a new thread should be opened, the topic is getting derailed from the Palestine/Israel conflict.
