I'm curious about where Crescent's migration theory came from. That runs counter to most of what I read.
Slavery was historically allowed in Islam, but not in the sense that it existed in Western and colonial societies. Islam's permission of slavery depended on fair and equitable treatment of slaves - feeding them and dressing for them at the same standard as their owners, not forcing them to work, giving them the right to property and the right to be able to buy their own freedom, any many others.
In my family, for centuries until my generation every male in my family has had the pre-name (title) "Ghulam" before his first name, Ghulam being the persian word for slave. The fact that we were slaves centuries ago was a historic badge of honour; reflecting a time once when through being slaves my ancestors held positions of power; and reflects how things were good for us when we were slaves.
Of course, over time the Islamically permitted form of slavery became less widely practiced and more western-style exploitive forms took over, especially as practiced by Morocco and Oman in the 1800s and 1900s.
