When Aziz was ‘stared down’ by Rice

  • By Qudssia Akhlaque

ISLAMABAD, May 20: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has been mentioned in rather uncharitable terms in US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice’s biography according to which when he tried to charm Dr Rice on her first trip to Pakistan in 2005, she “stared him down”.

The book titled: `Twice as Good: Condoleezza Rice and Her Path to Power’ by Newsweek Chief of Correspondents and Senior Editor Marcus Mabry has been recently launched in the United States.

Although the biography has been written by an independent journalist, the adjectives used for an incumbent prime minister appear to be unprecedented in their harshness.

** Referring to Ms Rice’s first trip to South Asia in March 2005 during which she also visited Pakistan, the author writes: “Yet, when Rice sat down with Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, who fancied himself a ladies’ man, Aziz puffed himself up and held forth in what he obviously thought was his seductive baritone.****(He bragged – to Western diplomats, no less – that he could conquer any woman in two minutes.)

“(He tried) this Savile Row-suited gigolo kind of charm: `Pakistan is a country of rich traditions,’ staring in (Rice’s) eyes,” a participant at the meeting recalled.

“There was this test of wills where he was trying to use all his charms on her as a woman, and she just basically stared him down. By the end of the meeting, he was babbling.”**

** “The Pakistanis were shifting uncomfortably. And his voice visibly changed.”** Some of the foreign men, the American official said, “They don’t get it …She has a really strong will, and I think people sometimes ‘misunderestimate’ her.”

There are also references to President Gen Pervez Musharraf in the book and how Ms Rice on her first trip to the region had serious items on her agenda, including “Pakistan’s weak efforts to root out the Taliban and Al Qaeda”.

“Then there were perpetual Pakistan-India tensions with Pakistan being a nuclear power that faced its own radical Islamists, as well as having its own ‘freedom deficit’, General Pervez Musharraf having come to power in a coup before being elected in widely boycotted elections.”

The author also mentions that Ms Rice had telephoned President Musharraf to explain that Washington was signing a new nuclear pact with India.

“The deal with Delhi, like Washington’s limited moves to stop the killing in Darfur, was a profoundly realist accommodation to the world as it was (the reality of a nuclear India) rather than as it should be (the ideal of non-proliferation.),” notes the author.

I am surprised no one posted this…or has the current dispensation become so discredited that nobody cares anymore?

I’ll hand it over to Mr. Fraudia to do his usual trick and blame Zardari and the like.

Re: When Aziz was ‘stared down’ by Rice

This just shows the mental frustration of US officials..writers...and millitary experts for the "honour" they are receiving from few thousands....

Re: When Aziz was ‘stared down’ by Rice

Qudsia Akhlaque is trying to make a story where there is none. If she thinks that by twisting such a minor incident she can prove the incompetency of Pakistani premier, then she is a fool. First of all, if Ms Rice knowingly let such a comment to be printed to show the world that she is a "strong willed woman", it is extremely petty and unprofessional and not suitable for a woman of her stature. What is next, her penis is bigger than Musharraf's?

Flame of Life, your last remark suggests as if you think this is a big issue that impacts Pakistan's stature in world politics. Tell me more about why you think it is a news worthy item and I will comment more.

Re: When Aziz was ‘stared down’ by Rice

Re: When Aziz was ‘stared down’ by Rice

Re: When Aziz was ‘stared down’ by Rice

I was a bit surprised this wasn't posted earlier on..but i suppose trashing BB's marriage is only acceptable to some people

Re: When Aziz was ‘stared down’ by Rice

Shaukat Aziz used to be considered a respected technocrat, he is now viewed as a syncophantic politician, years of power have changed him for the worse

Re: When Aziz was ‘stared down’ by Rice

Politician :D , Some politicain rightly said abiut him on TV that if we leave our PM in his own constituency - he wont be able to find his way out of the small town (since he wont know where he was!)

Re: When Aziz was ‘stared down’ by Rice

^^ yes ..he is not a politician..but what a ridiculous this Rice is makilng....she is not even the foot-level of Shaukat Aziz....

nope...many muslims are black...islam never differentiate about that...the point is..she consider herself the "hawk" of Bush administration and the main personality...which persuaded bush to attack Iraq.....she insisted about WMD's presence...but its the good fate of USA to enter the land of Iraq...where there are thousands of aulia are buried..and this holy land...now Rice is facing the deadliest defeat of its history...Rice now has forgotten all her pride...now..she is a looser....and acting like a small mad frustrated child !!!!

Re: When Aziz was ‘stared down’ by Rice

I'm sure Rice too was dragging..if only her knuckles.

Re: When Aziz was ‘stared down’ by Rice

I agree, the assumption that our PM would find a sheedi attractive is repugnant to my refined views and world view.

Re: When Aziz was ‘stared down’ by Rice

:)

Re: When Aziz was ‘stared down’ by Rice

FOL- no need to drag zardari into it.

Condi is so discredited in US that her views dont matter, except to the rabid ultra rigjt winger types. If staring down shaukat aziz because he was trying to charm her is something that is needed to fill her biography, it just speaks volumes about her (lack of) accomplishments.

Re: When Aziz was ‘stared down’ by Rice

Humara prime minister A self described ladies man!
**
***I think most people don't realize that he was not hitting on Condi, he was hitting on Condi the Secretary of State of the US. In short he was not interested in screwing her but the office she represents.:)

Re: When Aziz was ‘stared down’ by Rice

i don't think that mentioning Aziz's part in the book would do any good to rice's biography .................. pathetic
