My dear friend, I would call him a "Ahindu" (in Hindi) which simply means NOT-Hindu. But kaffir means something very bad in Arabic. Remember kufr? That word your sweet mawlawi uncle taught you not to commit? Kufr is sin, and kaffir is a cognate word which would mean sinner. So it is an insult word. Now where is the question of respecting non-Muslims?
