I’m way late to the party, but has anyone read this series? Do you hate Aes Sedai as much as I do?
Re: Wheel of Time series
Absolutely not. Its a corrupted organization just like the Church but I do not hate them as much as I can not stand Nynaeve.
I however do find the idea of Warders to Aes Sedai an interesting foil.
What book are you on anyway? After book 4 they tend to drag on a quite a bit.
Re: Wheel of Time series
I'm on Book 7, A Crown of Swords and yes, they have started to slow down. I hear book 10 is particularly brutal. I've pretty much spoiled everything for myself by going on Wiki so I might just read chapter summaries for the slower books.
Yean Nynaeve is annoying at first, but I feel like she's getting better whereas Elayne and Egwene are regressing. I hope Rand puts the smack down on her plans in the next book.
Yeah the Warders are interesting, especially the Aes Sedai's reaction to Asha'men bonding women. Talk about hypocritical.
Re: Wheel of Time series
LOL! Well remember men who could channel are the devil incarnate. Consider the Aes Sedai the Guppans of life1. Then it all makes sense. :D
Well I read up till book 8. I can't find book 9 anywhere. No freaking where and I don't wanna progress any further without reading the book. But I am very very impressed with the world created and the story lines. They are complicated as hell, but its the first world that I have felt is truly alive after Middle Earth.
Re: Wheel of Time series
If you don't mind e-readers, you can buy it off Amazon, or just download it for free. I have the entire series on Kindle.
And yeah the attention to detail is impressive, albeit somewhat repetitive at times. You should read A Song of Ice and Fire. It's not as varied in terms of cultures, but the characters are much more morally ambiguous and don't hold to the usual fantasy archetypes.
Re: Wheel of Time series
Yesss I totally understand what you two are on about and I totally agree with everything yer saying... vat nyc kitaab! -_-
Re: Wheel of Time series
I need to get a kindle but I like the feel of paper when I read my books. I can't do the whole e-reader thing. I know its easier, cheaper, lighter and all that. But reading books is reading books. I don't know I just can't buy an e-reader for some reason.
I read a song of fire and ice when it first came out by Martin just bored me. Plus to be honest so much of my work entails working with people who are morally ambiguous, double crossing back stabbing *******s, I rather stick to the stereotypes of good vs bad.
Farah could be a small county in the Game of Thrones universe the way politics are played here.

I feel like we're being mocked...

Yeah I resisted e-readers as well but I started stealing my brother's Kindle for WoT and I'm sold on it. I'll still buy books I consider favourites, but I'll use the Kindle to keep the collection manageable.
Lol fair enough about Martin. And his last two entries were sub-par as well, but apparently not as bad as the Jordan's slump. I love the detailed world in WoT, and the ambiguity in Ice and Fire.

I feel like we're being mocked...
But I was mocking myself because I don't have a clue what the book's about.
Re: Wheel of Time series
Ignore BBQ. She is just jealous she isn't an Aiel warrior :D
Back to the book. How do you feel about the change in authors since Robert Jordan passed away? I have book 10 to 13 with me right now and they just seem to get longer and longer!
Re: Wheel of Time series
No, she’s jealous that she’s not a sister-wife. ![]()
Since I’ve spoiled things for myself, I read part of Towers of Midnight (book 13) and it’s much faster paced. Which is refreshing. The books aren’t as detailed but at this point, I think the various factions are well established, and RJ left extensive notes for Sanderson.
I read an interesting comment regarding the mid series slump. Some people want the plot, and they want it now, while others enjoy reading the character interactions. I think I’m in the latter camp because I’m on book 8 now, and while some people found the last 2-3 books unbearable, I thought they were better than advertised. I found them slower and frustrating at points, but when the chapters dealt with characters I liked, I hardly noticed.
Re: Wheel of Time series
Read the first chapter of The Eye of the World last night…so far it sucks. Nothing like R.R. Martin’s work. ![]()
I will carry on reading though…until The Winds of Winter.
Re: Wheel of Time series
Game of thrones absolutely sucks compared to wheel of time. Not my words, people who have read both say this. Once u get into wheel of time, its hard to find a book as good.
if WoT was Homer’s Odyssey, GoT would be snow white and the seven dwarfs
Re: Wheel of Time series
Some people can’t get into it but the first 3 (or 5, depending on who you ask) books in WoT are generally considered to be amazing. In terms of mainstream success and popularity it’s probably second only to Lord of the Rings. The style is definitely different though. Whereas most books jump ahead a few days, WoT describes almost every event in detail. The world building is considered top notch. I would definitely suggest that you give it a try, it becomes amazing as the series goes on.
From what I’ve heard, the general opinion is that they’re equal to each other. I would say more people like GoT simply because it’s light on fantasy elements initially. Martin’s ability to weave morally grey characters is phenomenal, whereas WoT is pretty cut and dry in terms of good and evil. I love them both though. Basically:
WoT: epic story, lots and lots of places and characters, the world building is amazing
GoT: less fantasy, morally grey characters, still hasn’t finished and we’ve yet to reach the crescendo where the different plot lines start to come together (will the Stark comeback finally being with the Winds of Winter?)
Re: Wheel of Time series
People can be cruel with their opinions. Speak for yourself, my friend.
Re: Wheel of Time series
Ghost: fair enough. I havent personally read GoT so I can say how it compares.
Hareem: my personal opinion, based on the tv series and what ive heard about the books, if you enjoed GoT series, you will love WoT. It takes about four chaptets but then it dives into a densely detailed and high fantasy world.
