Whatsup with...

saying ‘thank you’ to the bus drivers?

I can never understand why people say thank you to them. It’s not like we’re given a free ride for which we’re thanking them for. Try giving them a little less than the actual fare and they’d do their utmost to tell you off and embarass you.

Hence, I don’t thank them. I pay the exact fare and get off at my stop. Oh! not to forget.. they aren’t the best drivers.

Re: Whatsup with…

if thats TTC you are talking about - think twice
I found them quite helpfull - curteous - and well mannered
specially with the elderly - and with ppl with small kids

paying the exact fare is what you need to do - nothing is free :stuck_out_tongue:
but the extra services that they provide - like helping you find the exact address - maybe even stopping the bus midway - away from a stop - just for convenience - deserves a THANKYOU

Re: Whatsup with...

James_Bhaand, indeed I'm talking about TTC.

Yes, they provide you help and what not. I'd only thank them when they actually help me get to a destination and not when I regularly have to take the bus from work to home. They're not doing me any extra favour. I'm paying them for the service and not to forget TTC is becoming quite expensive.

Re: Whatsup with...

I would say thank you just to be nice to make them feel appreciated. They are doing a job. They are offering us a service. Imagine if they went on strike, what would happen to most of Canadians, especially those who don't have cars because I know a lot of people don't. Then you would learn their value. They sometimes have to face idiots and if one person tells them thank you, I think it means a lot to them. I used to ride in busses in Pakistan but never rode one in US. The only time I had to ride a bus was when I was in Canada (Toronto to be exact) in 2002. I found them VERY helpful. I used to sit next to them and ask them where flaani flaani place was and they always told me.

I usually used to sit in one bus and go back and forth down the road, which was no problem. One time, I had to go to some mall and I had to switch busses. I had no clue what bus to take but the current driver of the bus told me. His shift was over and he also had to get off on the same stop where I had to get the other bus. He stood there with me until my bus (the one to take me to the mall) came and THEN he went home after I left.

This may not be a big deal for you, but ask a person like me who is a total stranger in a different country and has no idea where he is and where he is going!

Re: Whatsup with…

^ my point exactly

Re: Whatsup with...

i say why not thank them...so what if they are providing you a service...does thanking them do any harm? if anything, it'll make their day, make 'em feel appreciated...which everyone deserves in my opinion, even for "just doing their job" for which they get paid etc etc...regardless of if they go the extra mile to help u out etc, which most of them would do if u ask for it...

and if nothing else its just courtesy...

who doesn't like to hear thank you...i'm sure u'd appreciate it too if u heard it at work from someone else, for something that u r supposed to do :)

Re: Whatsup with...

They have been on a strike or two in the past. Most of them love to get a raise everytime their contract expires. Not to forget, they're making a decent living as it is. Oh! Don't forget the annual fare hike.

My point is I would thank them if I find them extra helpful or something. Or I say 'thank you' out of courtesy after receiving a transfer. Other than that, I can't be bothered. It's their job to drive the buses and mine to pay the exact fare, board and get off when it's my stop.

However, I do get why people say 'thank you' out of courtesy. I don't find a reason to thank them, so I won't until I find a good reason for it. :p

Re: Whatsup with...

Why do you thank a doctor? Why do you thank a teacher? Why do you thank shoppers? Why do you thank store workers? Why do you thank many other professionals? It's their job to help you and they get paid for it so why thank them? Why not bus drivers?

I am not trying to convince you here to thank the bus drivers, but when you say "it's their job and they get paid for it", so does everyone else.

Re: Whatsup with...

Shikra bhai, I at least thank them when I get my transfer pass. Ab to thora thanda ho jain.
