I have always had this understanding that a friend is someone who you can turn to when you have a problem, who helps you through tough times and enjoys the good times with you…they can also help you practically but they’re mostly there for emotional support…
On the other hand, I know someone who believes that unless someone is going to use their professional connections to get you a job or do you other favors (like help you move or drive you to the airport etc)…they’re not a real “friend”…for them friends are for practical use and just “talking” or spending time is fazool…
Whats your definition of what a true friendship is?
^Well then that's not a friend. That's just a matlabi person.
There is a give-n-take in relationships, but that's not the sole thing it should be based on. And if it is....then that's not really a healthy friendship, if you can even call it that.

A friend is someone who laughs when I laugh, cries when I cry, and who can tell me when I've got food on my face/clothes or some other epic mishap thus reducing embarrassment in the vicinity of the general public

^This sums it up ...and that's basically what a good friendship is.
There are just 2 things I'd add. A friendship makes you feel good as a person. If being in a "friendship" makes you doubt yourself, or feel bad about yourself....then something's not right. Also a friend will be honest with you...because they sincerely want you to succeed, to look good, to be happy, etc....even if that means sharing an opinion that you may not agree with (but that can always be expressed tactfully).
