I remember one of my friends used to work at Microsoft and he used to get Microsoft software from Microsoft store for 10% of the selling price. I’m sure even at 10% sales price Microsoft must have been making profit.
Just today I purchased a student license for Adobe Creative Suite 2 - Premium for approximately $300 (CAD) including tax. I decided to surf Adobe’s website to figure out how much I would’ve had to pay had I purchased it directly from Adobe’s website. To my surprise, the conversion (to $ CAD) worked out to a whopping $1351 (CAD).
Why charge so much for a software? Why rip off people so badly when you can offer the same bundle for a lot less? No wonder software piracy is so common and on the rise, despite all the efforts exerted by the manufacturers.
Re: What’s up with charging exorbitant prices for software?
Fret Wizard, I can only agree to an extent. It’s hard to believe that piracy alone has lead to such exorbitant prices. I’m sure had the prices been reasonable and affordable, there wouldn’t be half as much piracy.
PA, now would this not increase the prices further?
Re: What’s up with charging exorbitant prices for software?
I disagree. If people can get things for free, they will, regardless if it costs a penny, or $300.00. It’s just the way people are. They will always make excuses for pirating, whether it be software, or music.

This is insanity!
try to ready closely Pakistani Abroad suggestion or try to Manage Internet Real-time Connection in a different way.
if you had to use Adobe CS2 on your laptop then I would really suggest you make good use of other alternatives; so called piracy.
Re: What's up with charging exorbitant prices for software?
Please don't fall for the company line that "piracy causes high prices".. Even if we paid twice this amount, it won't go into the Developer's pockets.
Adobe can charge these amounts because there is no real competition. Donate to Open Source development. As soon as there are cheaper/free alternatives, u'd see these prices free fall.. piracy or not.
And people WILL pay for software if it sounds like a reasonable return of their money.
Re: What's up with charging exorbitant prices for software?
If free product is readily available at one's fingertips, do you guys honestly think people will pay for it? The answer is no. I'm not talking about company licences, I'm talking about the individual home user.
Re: What's up with charging exorbitant prices for software?
if a software gives me an edge, i'll pay for it.. I see people continually paying like $50+ for some Photo editing software when similar functionality is available in various freeware offerings.. Yet.. the licensed versions give something extra people are willing to pay for.
Now if these software companies were to jack up their prices to $200.. people would be either content with the freeware stuff or quietly use pirated copies..
Re: What's up with charging exorbitant prices for software?
Tell me about it, i required Microsoft Office a few years ago and the time the product was retailing at about £450... i'm like what the hell i ain't going to pay such extortiante prices for a piece of software. So i spoke to a work collegue who knew someone i could purchase if from for a measley £10.....best worthwhile 10 bux i ever spent.
Re: What’s up with charging exorbitant prices for software?
Exactly. Why steal at all? If someone goes to a store, and finds the price for bread to be too high, is it his/her right to steal that loaf of bread because he/she thinks that the price is too high? Gas prices right now are high everywhere, are you going to steal gas?
Re: What’s up with charging exorbitant prices for software?
I dont agree with the examples you gave FW, and morally its okay not to “steal” and find alternative, here is one example, why in the universities people buy books and make copies of it and return it? they know they can still re-sell the books later after the term.
somethng is called need it and want it, in economic terms demand and supply why lower the price when you can make the most of it? I dont mind so called “stealing” the softwares, i would take it in this way, I am getting that software from my friend rom the other part of the world, a virtual friend
