I've done my research and ruby, sapphires and peridots are in abundance in the kashmir region and the border of afgh and pakistan.
What I wanna know is if they allow people to come and mine for the gems??
I'd love to spend a few weeks there.

legally brown when they get the stones they get them in huge sizes like slice them off and then they bring them to a factory where they are cut up into proper shapes and made into what people want them in
and no unless you have a big company that's going to pay them loads of money they won't let you come and mine

legallybrown some of these rocks are very very deep undergrown and the ones that are easy to get to are usually the ones that are of not-so- good quality.
the factorys that have sprung up would much rather dig for the good quality ones and send them abroad and the "cloudy" or dull stones can be easily picked up in the local markets.
As far as ive seen, the factory owners or land owners dont let amatuers dig for stones ....unless. Pakistan being Pakistan, you know a man who knows a man.
If you do go try to take a little guide book on rocks because you'll probably find lots of other semi precious stones that you wont know and may throw away because you think its worthless.

I've fossicked so mining is a bit different.
I'll try to research on whether I can pay someone to let me mine in their lands for a week.
Just for fun, they can keep half of what I find.
