Yo so I’m thinking about going to med school on the east coast in a couple years and just wanted to know what life is like in New York and New Jersey and What’s the Pakistani community like over there? Would you guys say it’s better than the DMV area?
Re: What’s it like in New York/New Jersey?
Depends on where you’ll be going to med school in NY/NJ?
Why don’t you come to Canada. Our med schools are waaaay harder to get into though ![]()
Re: What’s it like in New York/New Jersey?
I’m on the east coast (but in Philly). I spend a fair amount of time in Jersey and NY though. Love it here!
Re: What’s it like in New York/New Jersey?
I don’t want to live there, ever.
I’m lookin at a lot of schools, like rutgers and stony brook. It would be easier to get into my state medical schools since we have a lot of them and they prefer resident however I want a change of scenery.
Re: What’s it like in New York/New Jersey?
I’m lookin at Pennsylvania too. Does philly have that big city vibe or is it like an insular midwest city?
Re: What’s it like in New York/New Jersey?
Definitely a big city vibe! I lived in Ohio for a spell so I know a bit about the midwest vibe you’re talking about. And there’s a really good desi population here! It’s affordable with all the trappings of a big city (high walkability score, lots of parks, nightlife, restaurants) but without the pretension you sometimes get in places like NYC and Hoboken.
Re: What’s it like in New York/New Jersey?
You’re missing out buddy.
Rutgers is pretty good and the area is okay. I heard NJ has TONS of pakistani families (esp in that area) so you’ll get the desi scene if that’s what you’re into.
Re: What’s it like in New York/New Jersey?
Sweet, I’ll consider Pennsylvania.
Re: What’s it like in New York/New Jersey?
Yeah I figured, most of the girls i match with on minder are from either Jersey/NYC or the DMV lol. There must be a lot of brown people there.
Re: What’s it like in New York/New Jersey?
LOOOL! That’s exactly how you can decide where to go to med school. See where the most matches are and then plan your life accordingly.
You’re a genius. Pretty sure you’ve solved a lotta peoples’ problems with this thread. ![]()
Re: What’s it like in New York/New Jersey?
let me know if you pass through. There’s a decent Pakistani restaurant over in University City and I could give you a list of other things to see!
Re: What’s it like in New York/New Jersey?
Well yeah, I’m not telling my parents why i’m gonna move over 1500 miles away for med school but I feel like it’s a valid reason.
Re: What’s it like in New York/New Jersey?
Thanks!
Re: What’s it like in New York/New Jersey?
But remember what I told you a while back. Work on yourself and the girls will come.
Anyways, good luck with wherever you choose to go. You still have time to decide, and life has a way of always working itself out at the right time!
Re: What’s it like in New York/New Jersey?
Thanks! I know, I should chase money not girls. That’s not the only reason why I want to move on the east coast, I hate the hot weather down here, the conservative insular culture.
Re: What’s it like in New York/New Jersey?
Whatever we chase in life always makes us run more and more after it and we never end up getting it. I know it sounds SUPER philosophical and I’m pretty much in the same boat and tend not to let life drive me but I have to remind myself to chase after good health, trustworthy and kind people, happiness and peace. We often leave everything behind to get what we “think” we want but in the end it’s not what we truly need.
And how far south are you? I think living in changing climates and experiencing change of seasons such as fall and winter is pretty cool. Fall is my fav season especially with changing leaves and the pretty scenery. You’ll get to see that a lot of that in NJ/NY/PA.
Also, there’s narrow minded people everywhere you go. Just have to stick with people who vibe well with you.
Re: What’s it like in New York/New Jersey?
First thing is first! Take MCAT, get a good score, apply, fill out primaries and secondaries, wait for interview invites, go to interviews, get accepted and then decide!
You mostly don’t get much of a choice in Med school unless you are exceptional Harvard guy!
Good luck!
Re: What’s it like in New York/New Jersey?
Yeah lol, I kinda realize that. Thanks.
Re: What’s it like in New York/New Jersey?
Thanks. I live in the deep south lol, albeit in a suburb of a large city but I do want to get out and have new experiences.
Re: What’s it like in New York/New Jersey?
No wonder you want to leave!
