What's in fashion for us 'older' ladies?

So, what kinds of styles are in fashion for those of us who are almost middle aged? I don’t want to look like my 12 year old daughter wearing a short kurta and those butterfly salwar, but I also don’t want to look like an official ‘aunty’? I have a wedding to attend of a close cousin, and will be participating in several of the functions as an older sister (he doesn’t have any). The wedding is in January, so I don’t have much time, and I want to select my own clothes this time

Re: What's in fashion for us 'older' ladies?

^That's the problem, I can't imagine wearing any of the things I see in Jang or the other mags. I am a hijabi, which means that I have to adapt whatever I find to make it long-sleeved and make a matching scarf, but I still want to look nice.

Any tips?

A sari would be a perfect option. You can always opt for straight shalwars with knee length shirts which look very elegant. If its a family affair you could even wear a gharara or soemthing. I think that gown style is still in, you can wear straight pants or shalwar with a qameez and a fancy gown sort of thing on top, it gives u extra coverage too. Bhari shalwars look great too with knee length or slightly above the knee shirts too. I don;t think middle aged is too old to wear straight or sliiiiiiiiiiightly flared pants either, so long as u have the body to carry them. where will u be buying stuff from? Check the indusmart website, apparently they do a good job (as per syani1) and their prices r reasonable too and u’ll get better stuff than u can find in boutiques here.
I got some pictures from indusmart, I think they would all look great with regular shalwars and the last one with a somewhat toned down dupatta.

I like that stiff jamavar banarsi and kattan silk/raw silk material for middleaged ladies. Also, I wouldn't be afraid to try out chiffon! It's not as sheer as you think, and has a great "slimming" effect as opposed to the heavier brocade I mentioned above. Also, I like silk organza for formal wear on older ladies. I think this results in a dignified and polished look.

As for style...I'd do a narrow pant cut (not bootcut pants)...with a slight slit at the botom if you're feeling a little edgy with a shirt that is knee length. Anything shorter and you'll look like you're trying way too hard!

Remember, you're aim is clean lines and nothing overtly fussy!

A lot of the "older ladies" here wear the trouser sets. A short shirt with pants and design on the neck collar, sleeves, and maybe at the hem of the trouser. I think you could wear that and look really cute and sophisticated. :D

A sari is a standard classic.
