The book may be worth reading but while metro areas could be at risk, and some slowdown or back tracking in prices can be seen in the burbs, there is a small percent of people who would get hit hard in this scenario. if you bought your house of $300K and now its worth $600K, if it drops to $400K, you have not lost any realized gains. even if it goes south and is below your purchase price and goes from 600K to 250, which is unlikely, its is hardly a loss that will wipe you out.

The clear danger is for people who are in some areas where the pprices have gone thru the roof e.g. bay area, miami, dc, ny especially if they are in one of those interest only loans or have been in their homes for as short time, have not built equity etc.
